Women-owned businesses play a critical role in the U.S. economy, accounting for $1.9 trillion in revenue across nearly 13 million businesses employing 9.4 million people, according to American Express’ 2019 State of Women-Owned Businesses report. This vital subset of the workforce has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reporting that female small business owners are less optimistic about their revenue, investment and hiring plans, and have less access to capital, than their male counterparts.
Against the backdrop of this crisis, Diane von Furstenberg teamed up with Amazon for the second year in a row to spotlight women-owned businesses on the e-commerce platform. The month-long campaign highlights companies from several countries—including the U.S., India and Spain—including many handpicked by von Furstenberg, as well as friends and fellow A-listers like Mindy Kaling.
Amazon works with more than two million independent partners in the U.S. and 48% of the companies in the U.S. store are owned by women. And while 2020 was indisputably one of the most challenging years on record for small businesses, Amazon says small and medium-sized businesses that sell through its platform increased sales by more than 55% year-over-year.
