In 2020, Compton-bred rapper Roddy Ricch got $20 million richer. “I’ve made more this year than I have ever made in life—at home,” Ricch says. He won his first Grammy, and his debut album, Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, spent four weeks at the top of the charts earlier this year. The album’s breakout single, “The Box,” went viral on TikTok, with more than 1.2 billion videos using his song. Ricch, who was mentored by the late rapper and activist Nipsey Hussle, has begun investing in Compton commercial real estate. Also in the works: a foundation to teach financial literacy to residents in the city, where just 8% of the adult population has a bachelor’s degree. “Investing in Compton,” he says, “just felt like my duty.”
