Sex and the City protagonist Carrie Bradshaw’s obsession with designer shoes helped catapult the likes of Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin from the rarefied 2nd floor at Bergdorf’s onto the wish-lists of women and girls worldwide. Why, then, did it take Carrie Bradshaw herself — or at least her real-world alter ego, actress Sarah Jessica Parker — more than a decade to cash in on a luxury retail category she helped revive?

The show was on air from 1998 through 2004. Parker, her fame now such that she’s known by her initials, launched her SJP Collection shoe line in 2014. "Even though there had been interest in my designing a shoe collection, it wasn’t something that at the time I would have considered," she told Forbes backstage at the 2016 Women’s Summit in Manhattan, right before she addressed a packed house of female founders and leaders.

In February 2014, the SJP Collection debuted in Nordstrom . In 2015, the line started selling in Bloomingdale’s, its price range (most pairs go for $200-$400) more accessible to the average Sex and the City devotee than Carrie’s beloved Manolos.

In this clip recorded in 2016 at the Forbes Women’s Summit, Parker and Steve Forbes discuss how she fell into entrepreneurship and what’s kept her in it for years.
