There will always be work you don’t want to do, even though some of it you have to do and should do. You have to be a team player, but that does not mean you have to be a doormat. The latter will not help you in your career. Office housework like getting people coffee or finding a time for the team to meet is not tied to profit goals and will not help you to be seen as a leader. You want to be seen doing work that builds the skills and reputation you need to advance.

Interns, lower-level professionals and even more experienced professionals sometimes may be asked to complete office chores, and there may be times you feel like you have to do it. But don’t make it a habit. Stop the cycle. Here are four ways to say “no” to work you shouldn’t do.
