Attorneys general from several states, including Arizona, North Carolina and Texas, have requested additional information from the company about its marketing tactics, the filing said. Johnson &amp; Johnson—which denies claims against its powder—<a href="https://www.jnj.com/johnson-johnson-subsidiary-to-appeal-bankruptcy-court-ruling-that-deprived-talc-claimants-of-an-equitable-and-efficient-resolution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">set aside</a> $8.9 billion in its bankruptcy filing last year to resolve some 40,000 cases, though that plan was subsequently <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-10-17/j-j-weighs-third-bankruptcy-to-resolve-tainted-baby-powder-suits" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shot down</a> by a New Jersey judge.</p>

<p>Drugmaker Eli Lilly has launched a new website specifically for prescribing weight loss drugs through a telehealth service less than a month after the company&#8217;s new injectable, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/britneynguyen/2023/12/05/fda-approved-zepbound-weight-loss-drug-available-in-us-pharmacies/?sh=2cf010533603">Zepbound</a>, became available in U.S. pharmacies for overweight or obese adults.</p>

<p>Called&nbsp;<a href="https://lillydirect.lilly.com/pharmacy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LillyDirect</a>, the new website is the first of its kind from a pharmaceutical company and will allow telehealth providers to prescribe GLP-1 agonist drugs for weight loss, like Lilly’s Zepbound and Mounjaro or Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy.</p>



<p>The doctors working with LillyDirect will be able to prescribe any FDA-approved weight loss drug, but only patients who are prescribed the company&#8217;s Zepbound medication will be eligible for the at-home delivery service, Lilly CEO David Ricks told&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/weight-loss-drug-online-website-eli-lilly-rcna131597" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBC News.</a></p>



<p>The website can be used by people who have a BMI of at least 30, or of at least 27 if they also have at least one weight-related medical condition, according to NBC, and will also serve patients with diabetes and migraines.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.forbes.com/health/weight-loss/diet-companies-offering-weight-loss-medications/">Other websites</a>, like WeightWatchers, Noom and Found, also offer online prescriptions for semaglutide, the generic name for the medication that lowers the blood sugar and suppresses appetite, but LillyDirect is the first pharmaceutical company to do so.</p>



<p>Eli Lilly has said it is against the use of Mounjaro and Zepbound for &#8220;cosmetic weight loss,” Reuters&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/lilly-says-it-stands-against-cosmetic-use-its-weight-loss-drugs-2024-01-04/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a>, and supports use for their approved purposes.</p>

<p>The popularity of using diabetes drugs for weight loss has been on the rise since 2021, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2023/09/27/ozempic-prescription-jump-varies-across-us/70932858007/#:~:text=In%20a%20study%20out%20Wednesday,was%20approved%20for%20weight%20loss." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USA Today</a>, spurred by the approval of Novo Nordisk&#8217;s Wegovy that year. The drugs change how bodies respond when blood sugar rises and their active ingredient, semaglutide, increases the feeling of satiety to reduce appetite. A 2022 Mayo Clinic&nbsp;<a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2796491" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study found</a>&nbsp;that people who received weekly semaglutide injections for six months lost, on average, 27 pounds, but experts warn the medications are meant for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/omerawan/2023/06/19/why-ozempic-may-not-be-right-for-you/?sh=4911850149e1">long term use</a>&nbsp;and should not be seen as a quick solution to shed extra pounds.</p>

<p>The widespread use of drugs in the GLP-1 agonist class for weight loss has been criticized by some scientists and former users. Lab studies have linked the medications with thyroid tumors in rodents,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/type-2-diabetes/expert-answers/byetta/faq-20057955" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">according to</a>&nbsp;the Mayo Clinic, and the long-term effects of the medications are still largely unknown. The manufacturers of Ozempic and Mounjaro, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2023/08/14/what-to-know-about-gastroparesis-lawsuit-claims-ozempic-and-mounjaro-causes-the-severe-stomach-disorder/?sh=541d728f64a0">were sued</a>&nbsp;this summer over claims the medications cause gastroparesis, a severe stomach disorder. Some former users, including TikTok influencer Remi Bader, have been honest about severe weight gain after stopping the medication.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/remi-bader-shares-ozempic-experience-rcna65527" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bader said</a>&nbsp;the drug made her binge eating “so much worse” and said she gained back twice the weight she lost after getting off Ozempic. Actress&nbsp;<a href="https://people.com/health/stars-whove-spoken-about-ozempic-use-and-what-they-said/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amy Schumer said</a>&nbsp;she felt &#8220;so sick&#8221; while on weight loss medication.</p>

<p>The popularity of the diabetes and weight loss drugs in recent years has sent pharmaceutical stock prices through the roof. Shares of Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/brianbushard/2023/08/08/weight-loss-drug-frenzy-drives-eli-lilly-and-novo-nordisk-stock-to-record-highs/?sh=1bc2706370ab">hit record highs&nbsp;</a>in August following a surge in sales and promising clinical trials, respectively. Eli Lilly&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insideindianabusiness.com/articles/lilly-overtakes-rival-to-become-worlds-most-valuable-drugmaker" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">has become</a>&nbsp;the most valuable pharmaceutical company in the world, surpassing Pfizer&#8217;s market cap in 2022 and Johnson &amp; Johnson last year, and the success of drugs Zepbound and Mounjaro are expected to help the company &#8220;dominate the landscape in 2024,&#8221; according to a note from BMO analyst Evan Seigerman.</p>

Pharmaceutical First: Eli Lilly Website Will Prescribe Weight Loss Drugs Through Service


<p><strong>Blockchain technology is also revolutionizing supply chains in the pharmaceutical industry, in the process, helping track fake medicines. </strong></p>



<p>From genomics to robotics, technology is truly revolutionizing
the healthcare sector. And while it’s easy to become consumed by exciting,
futuristic trends like artificial intelligence (AI) diagnosis, digitized
patient records and 3D-printed medical tools, technology is also transforming
the pharmaceutical industry. How medication is prescribed, dispensed and
administered is big business with McKinsey predicting the value of Africa’s
pharmaceutical industry to be $65 billion in 2020.</p>



<p>But fake drugs are an ongoing and complex issue – they can
cause death, have unknown side-effects, fail to treat illnesses, and sometimes
even add to the spread of disease. According to World Health Organization (WHO)
statistics, 42% of detected cases of falsified (or substandard) pharmaceuticals
occur in Africa – reports estimate that between 72,000 and 169,000 children die
each year from pneumonia because of counterfeit antibiotics while fake malaria
drugs cause an additional 64,000 –158,000 deaths every year in sub-Saharan
Africa. Both antimalarials and antibiotics sit among the most commonly-reported
counterfeited drugs.</p>



<p>“Fake medicine distribution is rampant because business
processes are siloed between the various industry stakeholders, which puts the
industry at risk of fraud,” explains Heidi Patmore, a marketing consultant
specializing in technology that’s changing consumer behavior. </p>



<p>“One solution to this would be cross-company process
automation which could easily be enabled by a blockchain data interchange. This
creates an open information system that all players can use to verify the
authenticity of medication because it can track and trace it from when it’s
manufactured to when it is dispensed to the patient.”</p>



<p>Companies such as IBM and SAP are working on blockchain
solutions to weed out Africa’s counterfeit medication network. When medicine is
returned to pharmaceutical manufacturers, for example, it is often re-sold
instead of being destroyed. How can a small local pharmacy ensure what is
returned is authentic? SAP are working with their existing client base – Merck,
GSK, Ingelheim, McKesson and others – on a blockchain project to verify that
any returned drugs are original. </p>



<p>IBM Research’s solution for Africa (currently in development
in Haifa, Israel) includes a mobile interface and permissioned blockchain
backend that enables each certified and authorized party in the network to
initiate action, finish their transaction, and track its progress. </p>



<p>“It also includes the monitoring of temperature to ensure
compliance with the proper conditions for transportation and asset transfer,”
adds Inna Skarbovsky, a blockchain architect from IBM Research – Haifa.
“Blockchain ensures full provenance for each medicine package, uniquely
identified with a barcode or a serial number. This makes it possible for all
authorized parties to track the drugs through the entire supply chain and the
drugs’ life-cycle.”</p>



<p>This also allows significant cost reductions by eliminating each participant’s need to manage a separate system for traceability of its components. “It also improves procedural efficiency for change-of-hands, make it much harder for counterfeit drugs to be introduced into the supply chain and to be distributed to end-users,” says Skarbovsky.</p>

<p>Towett Ngetich is the CEO of Uthabiti Health, a Kenya-based pharmaceutical company that has implemented blockchain to bring transparency and accountability back to a country where statistics show that 30% of medicines sold are counterfeit. Uthabiti, which means ‘verify’ in Swahili, was started after Ngetich’s first-hand experience with the effects of fake health products: “Back in university, a significant number of students fell victim to unplanned pregnancies and unsafe abortions. With deep research, it was uncovered that there had been a supply of fake contraceptives and backstreet abortion pills into the student market,” explains Ngetich. More findings showed the presence of fake antibiotics, antiretrovirals (ARVs) and non-communicable diseases (NCD) medicines in the Kenyan pharmaceutical supply chain. </p>



<p>“Pharmaceutical science is the center of healthcare – one
mistake in any drug composition or formulation has the risk of endangering a
significant number of people. The need to access safe, affordable and quality
health products in its simplest form means life and death in diagnosed health complications.
Blockchain gives patients the ability to track and trace products using
attached IDs – it also gives Uthabiti Health the ability to know where all our
health products sit within each supply chain,” he says. Uthabiti Health
procures medicines from different pharmaceutical manufacturers. Once received,
they go to an internal laboratory for quality testing and are then labeled with
the product’s safety lab report – attached in their codes is a unique
blockchain ID. The medicines are then passed on to their partnering retail
points, ensuring that the medicines dispensed to patients can be verified with
something as simple as a text message. </p>



<p>“This brings in consumers in safe-proofing the supply chain
of pharmaceuticals,” adds Ngetich. </p>



<p>The proliferation of fake drugs throughout Africa is complex
– on average, medicine changes 30 hands before reaching the destined pharmacy –
but blockchain technology has great potential to help stop counterfeit medicine
distribution because it brings traceability and trackability to the entire
pharmaceutical supply chain, ensuring the immutability of information.&nbsp; </p>

<p>While blockchain is still a relatively niche technology, it is slowly changing how organizations operate. Blockchain promises better security and transparency, but not necessarily for the customer, in the case of drug allocation: “Where blockchain technology could likely increase efficiency and simultaneously decrease the abuse of medicines, customers benefit. The pharmaceutical and related industries are unique however, in that the ‘consumer’ is also a patient – a vulnerable group with special needs and rights,” explains Candice De Carvalho, the founder of Easy Ethics CPD.</p>



<p>Although overall transparency in the supply chain increases
through the use of blockchain, and this confers patient benefits, these must be
weighed against patient privacy and confidentiality.&nbsp; </p>



<p>“With emerging technologies more freely available, we’ve
observed an interesting shift in patient behavior, where data privacy is
regarded less as an absolute by patients, in favor of a kind of sliding scale,
where privacy itself is a currency that purchases medical benefits along the
way,” adds De Carvalho. “Patients, for the right benefits, are perhaps more willing
to part with some privacy privileges.”</p>



<p>De Carvalho questions the genuine knowledge that patients
have of any exposure they experience through their use of novel medical device
or systems innovations. The key drivers for the business are not necessarily
unified with the total needs of the patient. However, the more the technology
owners protect and balance the patient’s need for confidentiality and consent,
the more they will ultimately see business benefit.&nbsp; </p>



<p>“In the context of a doctor-patient relationship, the doctor has a positive duty to enhance patient understanding so that the patient enjoys a truly informed consent. Does this then mean that technology providers are now responsible in the same way that medical health workers are?” she ends.</p>

Cure For Counterfeit Drugs?

<p>Our beauty editor was the only journalist from Africa to meet Sharon Stone in Berlin, Germany, where the 57-year-old actress was launching the Restylane Proof in Real Life campaign as its brand ambassador. We asked her what keeps her going:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h4>Do you fear ageing? How do you feel about ageing gracefully?</h4>
<p>No, I would not fear ageing. I had a massive brain hemorrhage in 2001 and I nearly died. I have the experience of knowing what it is like to consider the possibility of not ageing.</p>
<p>In reality, it is a stupid concept to fear ageing. Ageing is a beautiful thing. Ageing is a gift, a gift that we need to embrace. We don’t have to embrace it by thinking it would just be great to shrivel up, and bend over and then fall down and die.</p>
<p>We can embrace ageing valiantly; we can embrace ageing gracefully. I love the saying ‘gracefully surrendering the things of youth’. I think that is a beautiful thing. Sometimes when we surrender the things of youth, we surrender them wistfully. We have moments of sadness, moments of little heartbreak for not having the things we had when we were younger. It is a fact. You see them go by, and there is a wistful sadness when they go, but you have to let them go. It is ridiculous to try and keep them. It’s beautiful then to look at who you are.</p>
<p>And if you have to lock yourself in the bathroom with a bottle of booze and stay in there until you get it, it is a good thing to do! Make friends with the one you are right now, and your former self. You have to do that, because that is the now that you are, and you want to stay in the now and move forward.</p>
<p>If you keep looking backwards, you are just going to fall down. All you have is the possibility of looking forward.</p>

<h4>What is the campaign about and why did you get involved?</h4>
<p>Proof in Real Life is a project I am working on with the pharmaceutical company Galderma to challenge misconceptions that aesthetic treatments create extreme results.</p>
<p>Many people are interested in aesthetic treatments but some are put off because they only see one side of the story – the images in magazines of extreme looks and altered facial features.</p>
<p>People these days want more subtle enhancements so they look like a healthier version of themselves, just taking off a few years or refreshing their appearance.</p>
<p>I got involved because I was excited and interested by the idea of providing first-hand evidence that allows people to judge the results for themselves. I myself had fillers to rebuild my face after my stroke.</p>
<p>I really support the concept of encouraging greater openness and awareness of aesthetic treatments. Although it is becoming a much more accepted practice, people can find the choice daunting and are scared of making inappropriate decisions.</p>
<p>I hope that this project will improve awareness of aesthetic treatments and the results so that people are better able to make an informed decision.</p>

<h4>What would you tell a younger woman about growing older?</h4>
<p>‘Don’t try so hard.’ I think, when we’re young, we try way too hard. We don’t realize simply being young is enough. There’s nothing wrong with being young and not knowing &#8211; that is the beauty of being young.</p>
<p>Now that we are living so much longer, we over-think age, but we have to stop and reframe it. A lot of us, we buy into the concept ‘this age means that’. But we have to put a pin in that and step back and realize: a certain age just doesn’t mean what we were told it was going to mean.</p>
<p>You have to think: I really could live a whole lot longer than I depended on, my life could be a whole lot different. I’ve got a lot more life ahead of me than I thought I was going to! So if I want energy, and I want to have hope and dreams, I actually can. I have to reframe this now. In order to get my energy, how do I take care of my health and wellbeing, to get this all back together again for this piece of my life that I’m going to have.</p>
<p>Because this is the age where we didn’t think we were going to have another big chapter of our lives. And we have – we can have another career if we want. We have an opportunity to look at the world and shape the world.</p>
<p>When we were children, women weren’t out there fighting to see if we could shape the world. Women that were ahead of us were out there trying to fight so that we could break the glass ceiling with our heads, and our generation did break the ceiling with our heads. Guess what, we didn’t just get a broken head, we get to have another chapter.</p>
<p>This is what is very exciting for me: If we’re going to have another chapter, let’s look damn good while we have it. Let’s look great, let’s feel great and let’s go get it. And let’s not blow up the f*^$#g planet while we’re doing it. Let’s see how we have a peaceful future; let’s see how we have a feminine reality. How can we create a beautiful future, let’s see what we want to do with this next piece, because we have it, and I don’t think we knew we were going to.</p>
<p>We’re going to have to blast that engine again, and it is just such a great opportunity, because we’re up to that. It’s like they are calling our name. We’re the women who have experience, we’re the women who have the education and we are the women who have wisdom.</p>
<p>We all know, because we all were younger, that there is a power in looking good. It is not a secret, but it is a secret we never openly said: If you look good, you get your power. You get stuff done! However you do it, there is a power in looking good. We want to look good, because there is stuff we need to do and we need to get it done!</p>

<p>What is your best treatment before a red carpet appearance?</p>
<p>Before a red carpet, I put my makeup on, and then I get into the bathtub. It makes my skin look radiant and my makeup look really good after it has been a bit steamed up.</p>

<h4>If you have fillers or an aesthetic procedure, what would you ask the doctor beforehand?</h4>
<p>I would ask: How much downtime? Will it bruise? Will it hurt, because I am a real baby?</p>
<p>Aesthetic procedures have improved and evolved enormously over the years: For example, think back to our parents’ generation, when women got these horrible facelifts and they would look like they’ve been sucked through a wind tunnel and their hairline would recede – we can all see the evolution. We’ve been through the phase where everyone wanted gigantic lips, and now everyone wants gigantic butts, right? All these different phases…</p>
<p>The thing, for me, that you want to stay true to, which never goes out of style, is classic beauty. And that is a subtle thing. It’s staying true to your own self.</p>
<p>I tell my children (they are boys) that boys are like trees and girls are like flowers. You have to remember every flower is not a white rose. There are a thousand flowers in the garden and it is important to remember what flower you are, and try to turn yourself into a different flower.</p>
<p>We need to keep ourselves fresh and make ourselves into the best flower that we are. I think that is the key here with these aesthetic treatments. It allows us to stay fresh, but who we are. The best evolution of aesthetic treatments is that it allows us to not change ourselves into someone else. It allows us to stay who we are, and make a subtle change to feel fresh and happy. I noticed with the treated twins in the campaign that they just felt happy; they didn’t feel different. That is a good thing.</p>

<h4>Do you have a secret to beauty?</h4>
<p>It’s a mystery to me. My parents were gorgeous, they were so good-looking, it was just crazy. For me to be good-looking was no mystery, my parents were just beautiful.</p>
<p>I think, as you get older, it’s not as much about the looks you were born with. It’s about the way that you live your life. If you are a mean person, you look like it when you get older. It is about having happy thoughts. You never look bad with lines around your eyes – I think everybody with lines around their eyes looks great because you know that person lived their life laughing and they had a happy life. But happiness is a discipline. Pleasure is a thing you have for a second and it goes away. Happiness is a choice that you make that sustains you. If you go two-three days and you’re unhappy, you have to stop and look at your life and think ‘what do I have in my life that is crushing me?’ And cut it loose. A person, situation, food, drink, whatever it is. You’ve got to stop it. You have to stay with the discipline of happiness, it is like burning at the gym, it’s a real thing.</p>
