For years, I’ve been a silent observer of the World Economic Forum (WEF), reading about it on the internet, editing reams of copy on it or watching it on TV. But one question has always remained in my mind. What drives thousands of people each year to a small alpine town in Switzerland to live out Professor Klaus Schwab’s dream, who founded the forum in 1971?

After traveling almost 13,000 kilometers from the tip of Africa to Davos, a semblance of an answer began to emerge.
The answer was not to be found in the sub-zero temperatures that left the entire body numb with cold nor in Responsive and Responsible Leadership, the theme driving the WEF Annual Meeting 2017. Instead it was to be found in the Congress Centre, or on the streets and hotels of Davos-Klosters.
It was to be found among the people – the 3,000 delegates that gathered for the event and the thousands of support staff.
The draw card – the opportunity to mingle and be seen with the most influential and powerful people in the world. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, crossed my path several times at Davos. Mauritius President Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, after sharing her plans for attracting investors to her country on a cold winter’s night, agreed to a photo with me.
Singer and songwriter Shakira shared her passion for early child development advising us that “today’s babies will drive tomorrow’s business. Their capacity to contribute will shape tomorrow’s societies, will solve tomorrow’s problems”.
Anne-Sophie Mutter, one of the world’s most famous violinists, entertained the crowds. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Finance Minister of Nigeria and Board Chair of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, discussed plans to immunize up to 300 million more children all over the world by 2020.
The allure of Davos is that it gives delegates a platform to discuss the most pressing issues of our time, such as the refugee crisis, climate change and can-women-have-it-all?
It offers an arena to do business deals with the richest, to form new contacts and exchange business cards. It provides purveyors a glimpse into where the world stands, shifts in geopolitics and the ironies and contradictions of the world. It allows those present to see who controls the vast majority of wealth and intellectual capital and how this has changed.
WEF 2017 was a world in which the largest bankers, infamous for the financial crisis, such as JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, could be heard offering their views on Trump making America and stock markets great again, while Ugandan-born Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director at Oxfam, was decrying that eight men own the same wealth as the 3.6 billion people who make up the poorest half of humanity, according to a new report published by the agency.
It was an arena that brought into stark contrast the plight of Africa, and the developed world when simultaneously it hosted a panel discussion with CNBC Africa on Powering Africa, while meters away, some of the leading minds in technology were debating what role artificial intelligence should play in our futures; and that the 48 countries that make up sub-Saharan Africa generate almost the same amount of electricity as Spain.
Davos 2017 was a gathering where UK’s Prime Minister Theresa May declared that Britain’s decision to leave the European Union was not a rejection of its friends in Europe but simply a vote to restore its “parliamentary democracy and national self-determination. A vote to take control and make decisions for ourselves”. Juxtapose this with Xi Jinping’s attendance. Jinping, the first Chinese president to attend WEF, led the country’s largest-ever delegation to the ski-resort town to make a statement that China wants to assume a global leadership role as the world struggles with isolationism, populism and polarization. In a speech at the event, he stated: “It is true that economic globalization has created new problems, but this is no justification to write economic globalization off completely. Rather, we should adapt to and guide economic globalization, cushion its negative impact, and deliver its benefits to all countries and all nations.”

Why The Richest And Most Powerful Go To Davos

The World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions takes place on an annual basis in China, alternating between the cities of Dalian and Tianjin. The forum is affectionately known as the Summer Davos and is quickly building in stature attracting business, government, academic and civil society voices from across the globe. The event focuses on technology and innovation. CNBC Africa first attended the Summer Davos in 2013 with just a handful of African delegates. This year, however, saw a much bigger African contingent with representatives from Rwanda, Mali and South Africa out in full force. This despite the Ebola epidemic which caused many delays in the granting of Chinese visas and resulted in a number of cancellations, most noticeably from the usually sizeable Nigerian delegation.
The gathering involved three days of intense debate over the latest and greatest technological solutions aimed at creating a better world for all. Many of the innovations are specifically focused on solving some of the developing world’s most pressing problems such as health, education, energy and infrastructure deficits. With many of the globe’s brightest young minds wrapped up in intense conversation, the event itself is nothing short of an innovation frontier.
With hundreds of technological innovations on display it’s easy to reach the conclusion that developing economies have the opportunity to leapfrog the developed world by deploying new state of the art technology solutions rather than upgrading old, existing infrastructure. This is particularly true when it comes to solving the energy deficits in emerging markets. Global energy infrastructure is dated in many developed markets, having been rolled out as far back as the 1960s and 1970s. When it comes to deploying new, efficient and cost effective solutions, emerging markets can deploy best-of-breed solutions from the outset. Smart grids, nano batteries and off the grid renewable energy solutions are trail blazing when it comes to electricity provision.
The digital world we now live in is fast paced and ruthless. You simply can’t ignore the tsunami of technological innovations facing both individuals and businesses on a daily basis. Adapt or die was the phrase often repeated at the Meijiang Convention Center where the conference was hosted. New businesses have appeared out of nowhere, think Alibaba, Amazon and Uber, all of which challenge traditional models and use digital savvy to come out on top. Traditional business models, now more than ever, face extinction. Businesses are scraping at the coalface, trying to stay close to their customers where innovation is forcing a consumer revolution. Customers have the upper hand in a world where information is ubiquitous and fast eliminating competitive advantage.
One of the key discussion points in Tianjin focused on the skills needed to survive in this ever changing world, where robotics are becoming the norm and automation a necessity. Science, technology, engineering and maths skills (STEM skills) are a must for children growing up in this digital jungle. It’s all about blended learning of practical applications for the real world and less about reciting facts day in and day out as many traditional education systems are premised on and that have very little to do with equipping an individual for this dynamic work environment. Don’t forget this is a world where a couple of kids in a garage piece together a new app that, overnight, launches them into the billionaire stratosphere.
Everywhere automation is impacting traditional jobs, but just as those jobs are being lost they are being supplemented by job creation in the digital and technological space. The revolution in the retail market has been created by online shopping. McKinsey recently released a report indicating that 80% of all purchases are now researched online before they are bought. Widespread comparisons are quickly being made and prices are being forced down – the customer, now more than ever, is king.
Innovation is also forcing companies to look at how they are internally wired. Digital supply chains are improving internal efficiencies and fast eliminating hybrid supply chains, consisting of part paper and part digital elements. Information is ubiquitous and in some instances carries very little value because it is so widely disseminated.
For me, perhaps most striking is the reality of 3D printing. Imagine being able to print a bicycle and cycle off into the mountains. Brace yourself, this is our new reality.

Our annual snapshot of the 100 women with the most impact are top politicians and CEOs, activist billionaires and celebrities who matter. In roughly equal measure you’ll find next gen entrepreneurs and media mavens, technologists and leaders in philanthropy – all ranked by dollars, media momentum and impact.
We’ve selected women that go beyond the traditional taxonomy of the power elite (political and economic might). These change-agents are actually shifting our very idea of clout and authority and, in the process, transforming the world in fresh and exhilarating ways.
This year the list features nine heads of state who run nations with a combined GDP of $11.8 trillion –including the No. 1 Power Woman, German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The 24 corporate CEOs control $893 billion in annual revenues, and 16 of the women here founded their own companies, including two of the three new billionaires to the list, Tory Burch and Spanx’s Sara Blakely. Speaking of, this year’s class has 14 billionaires valued in excess of $82 billion.

Ditto for Hillary Clinton (No. 5). She’s No. 1: Chancellor Merkel has made the list eight times out of the past 10 years – seven times as No. 1.
She’s the first: Forty percent  of the women on the list are “female firsts,” such as African head of state (Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf), billionaire to sign The Giving Pledge (Sara Blakeley), and CEO at IBM (Ginni Rometty). Even more impressive are a the women who are multiple “firsts”, such as Judith Rodin, first president of an Ivy League and of the Rockefeller Foundation  and Hillary Clinton.
Hillary stays on: Clinton’s CV is chock full of firsts: The only first lady to become a U.S. senator turned viable presidential candidate turned secretary of state. Now a private citizen, she continues to be one of the most watched and listened-to women on the planet. All bets on that she will be the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate and the free world’s presumptive next leader. She’s done little to quiet the chatter, including hitting the speaking circuit last month at an estimated $200,000 fee per event and inking a reported $14 million book deal.

Tech takes a second turn as a category on the Power Women list. Five tech women made the top 25 this year, including Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg (No. 6), Rometty (No. 12) and HP’s Meg Whitman (No. 15). There are 16 tech women in total, including also Susan Wojcicki, SVP of ads at Google (No. 30) and Sun Yafang, chair of Huawei Technologies (No. 77).

Oprah founded both Harpo Productions and The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls Sun Yafang (No. 77) and Solina Chau (No. 80). And Asian region women are showing their political might, from newcomer Park Geun-hye, the South Korean president (No. 11) and Burmese dissident and parliamentarian Aung San Suu Kyi (No. 29) to Australian PM Julia Gillard (No. 28) and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra (No. 31).

Malawi’s first female president (and second on the African continent) spent her initial year in office pushing for rapprochement with the international donor community while grappling with spiraling inflation and an angry populace at home. With foreign aid accounting for nearly 40% of Malawi’s revenue, Banda urged global financial institutions to restore the dollars and Euros frozen during the autocratic regime of her predecessor. But her decision to devalue Malawi’s currency by 50% – to meet IMF conditions – has resulted in soaring costs for food and fuel and widespread protests. Her first 12 months were also marked by progress in decriminalizing homosexuality and major public health initiatives such as the $15 billion Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria.

When Sri Mulyani Indrawati addressed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in April, the Indonesian economist shared a curious insight: while high-income countries continue to suffer in the wake of the financial crisis, developing countries have come out relatively unscathed. The World Bank projects average global GDP growth of just 2.5% in 2013. Indrawati has served as managing director and the most senior woman at the World Bank since May 2010; as managing director, she oversees the World Bank’s operations in Asia and Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. After a series of deadly accidents in Bangladesh, the World Bank and the International Labor Organization have put pressure on the country to overhaul its labor laws.

China&#8217;s most public first lady since Madame Mao, Peng is the stylish second wife of new leader Xi Jinping. She toured with her husband during Xi&#8217;s first presidential trip abroad to Russia and Africa in March and was credited with putting a human face on the Communist regime; not for nothing, Peng is a member of the Public Diplomacy Association, an organized tasked to make China more appealing abroad. The former superstar folk singer is often joked about for being more famous than her husband: &#8220;Who is Xi Jinping? He is Peng Liyuan&#8217;s husband.&#8221; Fashion editors watch her for her (mostly) made-in-China style, but she&#8217;s also a U.N. ambassador for health and a Goodwill Ambassador for the World Health Organization focusing on TB and HIV/AIDS.
