Munnik’s business is trying to solve one of the biggest modern day problems: the high cost of mobile data.
Through his company, Sliide, a technology company with offices in Lagos and London, Munnik helps address this problem by sending targeted news, entertainment and sponsored content to the lock screen of its users’ mobile phones. Seventy percent of all advertising revenue is used to buy mobile data and airtime for users, enabling them to spend more time online for free.
“Sliide is already a household name in Nigeria, and [there are plans to launch] in South Africa and Pakistan. $5 million of funding has recently been secured to expand into additional markets,” says Munnik.
This business has earned him many awards. In February, Sliide was name Most Innovative App in the World at the GSMA’s Global Mobile Awards in Barcelona; in November last year, it was named Best African App at the annual Apps Africa Awards; it was named Most Effective Consumer Smartphone App at the Effective Mobile Marketing Awards; named Mobile Marketing Company of the Year at the 12th Nigerian Telecom Awards in July2016; and named winner of the Game-Changing Innovation category at the West Africa Com Awards in June 2016.
