The exuberance of youth might be just what the doctor has ordered for Africa. There is no doubt that the zest this minister has for her responsibilities will take the continent far.&nbsp;

Bogolo Joy Kenewendo has hit the ground running in her role
as Botswana’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, while making history
as the youngest person to be appointed in the position. She, however, takes it
all in her stride as she has always wanted to impact people’s lives.
Kenewendo’s outlook injects a fresh perspective on how she, and her
counterparts in strategic positions, intend on enriching a continent brimming
with possibilities. She shares her views on education, finance, empowerment as
well as traditional practices. 



Q. Are you Africa’s youngest minister, and how does it feel to be “a first” in your career path?



A. I’ve heard rumors that I am the youngest but I have no
confirmation. It’s been a great surprise and an honor. I was so humbled by all
the good wishes and cheers from around the world. I, however, say youth
leadership was the flagship of the political independence and revolution, and
so it should be for the economic independence revolution that I believe our
generation should lead. 



Most of the revolutionary leaders who brought Africa its independence were younger and some of the same age [as me]. 



Patrice Lumumba was 29 when he was, unfortunately,
assassinated as Prime Minister. Kwame Nkrumah, Sir Seretse Khama and Julius
Nyerere were in their late 30s, early 40s. Graça Machel was 30 years old when
she became Minister of Education in Mozambique.

Q. Why did you choose politics?



A. I have always wanted to do something that I felt could
have an impact on people’s lives. I studied Economics and worked as an
economist because I believed it was a good choice for those looking to
interrogate policy and make informed adjustments to the benefit of all. Where I
am at the moment, I get to be part of the highest decision-making body in the
country that directly affects people’s lives.



Q. Being young, African and a woman, what does representation mean to you?



A. Representation is very important. We all need to be
reminded of what is possible in the world. People from what is termed
“backwater villages” need to see the girl from Motopi and be comforted in that
you don’t need to come from big cities, or have a “known name”, or be of “a
certain age”. If you work hard and represent yourself well, someone will take
note. The world is always watching.



Q. Describe your academic/career path and the plans you have for Botswana.



A. I have a BA in Economics and MSc in International Trade
and I’m pursuing some more higher learning. 



My team and I have plans of making Botswana the startup
capital of the region and we are repositioning Botswana as a gateway into the
rest of southern Africa. 



We are doing so by working on our business reforms, to enable doing business in Botswana and working on a one-stop border post services with our neighboring countries.

We are also investing in transport and ICT infrastructure
and of course, providing incentives, including a competitive corporate tax rate
of 5% in designated and reserved areas, as well as, government offtake
agreements with manufacturers who meet government needs most importantly. We
offer hospitality that is synonymous with our proudly Botswana culture, all
premised on Botho, democracy, accountability and peace.



Q. Africa has a prominent rural population that often has less civic participation because of lack of resources. What would you say to them?



A. Living in a modern economy doesn’t mean we should abandon
some traditional ways of engagement and accountability. We should enhance them
and demand for governments to notice them for the purposes of inclusivity. 



No government should wish for a disengaged population, it’s
in their best interest to ensure inclusivity and, therefore, such efforts
should be rewarded. In Botswana, the government holds the rural and traditional
courts highly and uses them as a key consultative and engagement/ participation
platform. 



The kgotla system has now been copied and exported by
thought leaders, recognizing Tribal Management of inclusivity, a community
spirit and ensuring that each gets the chance to voice his or her opinions,
every stage along the way. Echoing the true meaning of lekgotla, “I am because
we exist,” which in the West is democracy, ‘for the people, by the people’. 



Q. Share your highlights and the most challenging moments you’ve had so far.



A. Leading this ministry and working for the people of
Botswana is an everyday highlight. Every moment has been quite intense because
I’m aware that the hopes of many rely on this ministry and our cooperation with
the rest of government. 



I thank God every day for the strength, wisdom and joy
(especially in the face of adversity) he gives me to do this role.



My first international engagement following my appointment was to chair a SACU Ministers of Trade meeting which had some high temperature issues. There was no easing into the job.

It felt like I was David thrown into the ring, before sizing
up Goliath. Fortunately, as it did for David, it went well for me. I am
currently coordinating and chairing trade agreement negotiations on behalf of
SACU+Mozambique with the UK (to deal with the potential trade disruptions due
to Brexit). It is a landmark event and, as a result, so is this agreement. 



At home, our investor after-care company visits bring my
team and I so much joy as they show us what’s possible – the productive
capacity in Botswana. These as well as removing roadblocks for companies and
seeing them flourish. In this short space of seven months, we’ve seen great
progress and this is reassuring. 



Q. What are your economic views of the Africa continent?



A. I am pan-African. I love Africa, I believe in Africa.
Some say the ‘Africa rising’ story is no longer valid but I say ‘dismiss this
beautiful continent at your own peril’. 



I’m hopeful about opportunities, of increased intra-African
trade, that will be unlocked by the&nbsp;
AfCFTA [African Continental Free Trade Area] as well as Tripartite Free
Trade Area. 



Many more African leaders and up-and-coming leaders are alive to [the idea] that it’s only through our cooperation that we can pull ourselves out of our current debilitating state. And to that end in Setswana, we say “kgetsi ya tsie e kgonwa ke go tshwaraganelwa” (Together, we can do more).

A. Never let anyone make you believe that you are not
enough. 



You are enough. 



Public spaces, leadership spaces, money spaces are female
spaces too! The most important thing is to ensure we are not comfortable in
being the ‘only woman’ at the table. Any space can do with diversity.

Bogolo Joy Kenewendo: Dismiss This Beautiful Continent At Your Own Peril

The South African netball team led by Bongi Msomi is working
towards becoming one of the world’s best.

National team captain Bongi Msomi has become a great
ambassador for South African netball as she continues to make waves ahead of
the World Cup in England later this year, becoming a role model in a sport that
has wide participation among women in the country.



Msomi took up netball late, and quite by chance, but has
risen to become a top international player, having turned her passion for the
sport into a career.



She has played professionally in England and Australia, and
has been part of the senior national team set-up since 2011, becoming a key cog
in their rise to number five in the world rankings.

It has been a meteoric rise and an unexpected one at that, but Msomi is proud of her achievements, and feels there is more to come.



“I only started playing netball in Grade 11 when I was 16 years
old and it all happened by accident,” Msomi tells FORBES WOMAN AFRICA from her
base in England, where she currently plays for Wasps.



“I was at Luthayi High School [in Hammarsdale,
KwaZulu-Natal] and went to watch one of the training sessions as some of the
girls from my township played in the team. I had no interest in netball at all
though.



“But that day, there were only 13 players at training and the coach wanted to play a match, which you need 14 players for [seven per side]. So they asked if I would fill in and that is where it started for me, I was hooked. It was all by accident really!

“I owe a lot to my school coach [Sthembiso Mncwabe] as he
put a lot of time into helping me with my skills. Because I started so late
there was a lot of work needed.”



Msomi quickly rose to prominence with her athletic ability
and skill, and within a few years had made the South African Under-19 side, and
then the Under-21s, and her leadership qualities, meaning she captained the
latter side at the World Youth Championships in the Cook Islands in 2009.



It took her a little longer for senior team recognition
though, as she attended a number of camps without being selected, until she
made her bow at the 2011 World Cup in Singapore.



“I haven’t looked back since then,” Msomi says. “I have been a regular in the national team, was the vice-captain for a while and am now the captain, which is obviously a very proud moment for my family and I.

Msomi is currently in her third season in England, having
turned out for Surrey Storm and now Wasps, winning championships with each, and
with a spell at Adelaide Thunderbirds in Australia as well.



“Playing professionally has been amazing, being able to turn
this passion into a paid job is just unbelievable,” she says. 



“There are now eight of us in the national team that are
playing professionally overseas and that certainly makes us a stronger team. 



“But it also shows me that we do have a long way to go in
South Africa, when you see how professional players train, eat and look after
themselves. That should be our goal and we are moving in that direction.” 



The Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League is a provincial
competition in South Africa that has been played since 2014, and is slowly
helping to improve the standard, according to Msomi.



“It exposes players to be seen and is an amazing set-up, but
it could still improve further in terms of being more competitive and preparing
players for the international stage.



“We know as a country, we can play netball, we have proven
that, but the step up to the level of the top teams in the world is huge. When
you see how top players train on and off the court, then you realize what it
takes to get to the very top.” 



Msomi will be a star player when South Africa compete at the
World Cup from July 12 to 21.



Australia head the world rankings, followed by New Zealand,
Jamaica and England, and Msomi says finishing in the top four positions at the
tournament should be the goal of the side. 



“Every country wants to win a medal and that would be
amazing, but my honest wish for us, looking at where we have come from, would
be to look at finishing in the top four first.



“We have shown the world in the recent quadrangular series
that we can push the top teams hard. We beat England and only lost to New
Zealand in extra-time when we really should have won.



“Once you make the semi-finals, anything can happen in professional sport. It all comes down to how the two teams perform on the day. After that, who knows, anything is possible,” Msomi says.

Netball SA CEO Blanche De La Guerre has watched the
development of Msomi through the years and believes she is an outstanding
ambassador for the sport in the country.



“From a shy, quiet young player, she has absolutely
blossomed into this confident and opinionated player. It has been wonderful to
see!” De La Guerre tells FORBES WOMAN AFRICA.



“Bongi is such a good example of somebody who has succeeded
despite the odds being stacked against her. She never made excuses along the
way, and always put in the hard work necessary to get to the top.



“Through tough times, she could have blamed the fact that she
had started late in the game, that she had no takkies [sports shoes] or kit, no
gym to go to, but she never did that. She just made sure she worked harder than
everybody else.



“She is an example to every little girl out there that you
can make things happen for yourself if you put in the hard work. That you can
become a national captain and play overseas.”



De La Guerre has praised the leadership of Msomi and the
work that she does away from the court.



“She has excellent leadership qualities and delivers a powerful message. She also leads by example, which I think is one of her best qualities. She spends a lot of time doing development work when she is back in South Africa, inspiring young girls to take up the sport.”

Bongi Msomi Is No Longer On The Sidelines

As a teenager, Mabel Ledwaba turned her bedroom into a
beauty parlor. Today, her brand has made a mark on the local beauty industry.

An 83km drive to the&nbsp;
industrialized Vanderbijlpark in the southern parts of Johannesburg
presents an undulating green and brown landscape. 



In the midst of all the dullness, we are greeted on arrival
by a well-groomed beauty entrepreneur in this town in South Africa’s Highveld. 



Like an Egyptian goddess, make-up artist Mabel Ledwaba
glides in, in a full-length, draped black dress, and recollects her
entrepreneurial journey.



“It was a long ten years of trial and error,” says Ledwaba,
arching her well-shaped brows.



Ledwaba, who initially planned on opening a nail and eyelash
bar, founded a make-up line that is today worth over R2.5 million ($181,000),
and has a presence in all nine provinces of South Africa.

The transition from employee to employer took six months
before Havillah Beauty officially launched in 2008.



In just two years, the business grew from occupying 20
square meters to a 50-square meter establishment in a commercial office space.



“You can have a business plan but you never stick to it,”
Ledwaba says.



Tapping into a market at a time when international cosmetics
dominated in South Africa, Ledwaba was determined to make a mark as a local
brand.



With a dream and passion for business, as a teenager, the
township beauty queen converted her bedroom into a beauty parlor.



The informal business operated from Monday to Saturday when she would return from school, without extra time for social activities. 



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">“You prepare them [clients] to go see their boyfriends and to go to the clubs. It kept me out of mischief,” she says. </blockquote>



As her popularity grew throughout her community, she took
her talent beyond the streets, and she pursued a qualification in cosmetology.
She also honed her talent for hair-dressing, infusing a local feel to different
hair textures and styles.



“I gave them that township feel of doing hair in a white
salon. I remember I was the highest paid because everyone got paid on
commission, and everybody wanted me to do their hair. That, as well, taught me
business skills. I saw the professional side,” she says.



With a starting capital of R80,000 ($5,700) that she
received from her husband, she never looked back.



Importing the make-up products from Germany, Ledwaba mixes
the powder pigments to cater for the African market.



“Reach out in aggressive marketing; reach out in terms of
being aggressive where you make sure they feel and they touch the product. They
will not buy the product based on trust, they will buy it because you have
given them enough proof that it works. An international brand, they buy on
trust but with us, they buy based on proven facts, so we have to do double the
work,” she says.



“We do not manufacture from scratch, but we are mainly responsible for the colors we mix. We have a supplier in Germany, who supplies other brands. We tell them to mix the colors in a specific way so that we have our colors,” she adds.

Testing the market in a Johannesburg mall paved the way for
business development and strategies.



Online and pop-up stores propelled the brand into a
competitive market.



In a market research report on the cosmetics industry in
South Africa 2017, published by ReportLinker, “the value of the sector, which
includes the manufacture of cosmetics, perfumes and other personal care
preparations, is estimated to have grown to R27.35 billion at retail level and
R19.69 billion at manufacturing level”.



“What feeling do you get when you see somebody you have
applied make-up on and their face just shines,” asks Ledwaba as she turns the
mirror in our direction.



She also imparts her know-how to other aspirants in the
industry, adding value to the skills of young people.



Makgotso Mpalakanye, a 22-year-old make-up artist who works on South African soapie Generations The Legacy, had completed a course at Havillah Beauty. 



“I started doing make-up at a young age, and I took it
seriously at the age of 20. I was lucky to find a lady who took me to school
and paid my fees,” Mpalakanye says, who now has an academic understanding of
the beauty industry.



“It helps you improve and know different make-up types,” she
attests.



As Ledwaba’s business continues to grow, her determination
to develop a culture of entrepreneurship in the make-up industry is showing no
signs of fading away.

Her Brush With Business

The story of love, loss and triumph. The story of humanitarian, model and mother, Noëlla Coursaris Musunka.

This is a tale of generational loss. A tale about how, at the tender age of five, a child lost everything she held dear. She lost her mother, her father, familiar surroundings and was relocated from the country she’d come to know as her home. However, in losing so much, she seemed to have gained everything and insists on sharing it with others. 



After the death of her father, when Noëlla Coursaris Musunka was five years old, her mother could not afford to keep her and was forced to give her only child (at the time) away in hopes that she would get better opportunities. 



Musunka moved to Belgium, and later Switzerland, and was away for 13 years with very little communication with her mother back home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

“It was a tough time… I received two or three letters from my mom and spoke to her only twice on the phone,” says Musunka. On her return, at 18 years, she was so struck by the abject poverty that she vowed to contribute to the education of her brothers and sisters, and would give back to her country. 



And she has done so in spectacular fashion. 



Musunka has since had a flourishing career as a model and has graced the pages of fashion magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire and Elle. The exposure propelled her to pursue her passion for humanitarian and philanthropic work. 



When asked about what accolades, such as the one she received from the Nelson Mandela Foundation (in November 2018) and the Enhle Cares Foundation, mean to her, Musunka beams and says: “It’s very special. I’m a pan-Africanist. I love Patrick Lumumba, I love Mandela, I love Sankara. I love all these revolutionary people… who want the best for Africa… The spirit of Mandela is [his] legacy. When people remember Noëlla, I want them to remember my legacy. And my legacy and my message is to give back.”

“I’m very happy that the Mandela family contacted me and said ‘this is what our dad would want. You are a young woman investing in education and that’s the reason we want to honor you’. It’s very touching and I’m not into awards, but this one is very special.” 



Since founding the non-profit organization Malaika in 2007, it has grown from a one-room school house to a world-class school that accommodates 314 students of all ages. As the school continues to operate, it plans on adding approximately 30 girls each year. 



The Malaika Foundation, which is in the village of Kalebuka, in the southeastern region of the DRC, has also established a community learning center, recreational facilities, 17 water wells and farm land. 



This is due to the tenacity and collaborative efforts of 31 Congolese staff members working on the ground in the DRC, and support from a team of 30 volunteers working in the US, Europe, the DRC and other locations. In Kalebuka, the community plays an integral role in the daily running of the school. 



“We have 30 parents a day who come to maintain the school. The whole community is driven. The village takes care of the program and protects it. The community center is good because it’s also important to teach the parents. We have the youth and the parents who come to the community center to learn to read, write, sew, and we have key messages. We also distribute malaria nets. 



“So, we have 5,000 people who go there and all programs are free. The school is for free. The staff [members] give of their time, their skills and their money. We have a pro-bono lawyer, pro-bono auditing … [and] we teach the mothers to make the uniforms. We give the girls underwear, socks and shoes.” 



The colloquail term ‘say it with your chest’, means to say something with determination, self-assurance and without fear. During her interview with FORBES WOMAN AFRICA at the Da Vinci Hotel in Sandton in Johannesburg in November, Musunka was wearing a t-shirt with the word ‘Revolution’ across it. The education revolution has swept the village of Kalebuka, in the form for Musunka and her team. 







“Two years in a row, we [Malaika School] have passed the national test. The minister of education came to our school and said, ‘this is an excellent school’. We really want to create scientists, businesswomen, politicians, presidents and journalists.” 



The developments go beyond the classroom, and focus on the holistic care of pupils. 



In 2018, the International Rescue Committee named the DRC one of the countries “most at risk of humanitarian catastrophe”. Similarly, according to the Reuters Foundation, “six of 21 agencies polled, including WFP, Norwegian Refugee Council, Oxfam, ActionAid, International Rescue Committee, and Christian Aid, named Congo as the most neglected crisis”. 



The ongoing conflict and rampant spread of Ebola are among the reasons the DRC tops humanitarian crises.

For many of the pupils, the school serves a lifeline in a country where little to no assistance is offered during a time of crisis. 



“The trust that the parents have in the school is very touching. One of the students came to me and said, ‘Noëlla, I’ve been at this school for eight years, and the school changed my life… I cannot believe that in four years, I will have to leave’. That’s their home. That’s their refuge. Taking care of the school is motivating [for them]. 



 “I want critical thinkers. I want them inspired by the beauty around them. They have music, they have sports, they have leadership classes, they have people from all over the world who come to talk to them,” says Musunka.

Due to conflict and other humanitarian challenges in the DRC, news reports about the nation have predominantly been about discord. Musunka says the socio-political challenges should be viewed with nuance. 



“Where we are in the southern east [of Congo], there is no conflict, but Congo is a very challenging country. It’s an economic war, not a civil war. It affects us, in a way, when we have to raise funds because the only press [coverage] that people see is the conflict, the rape, [and] the minerals. 



“The question is, who’s behind this conflict? Who’s giving arms to the rebels? Who’s destabilizing the country? Who’s taking the minerals? For me, when I see all of that, the only way to elevate Congo is through quality education… And, these minerals of conflict need to be minerals of peace, minerals of transformation, minerals of elevating the country and being invested in the people. 



“Right now the minerals don’t benefit the people, they don’t benefit the health system, the infrastructure, the education, and people live under one dollar a day, and seven million children are out of school.”

The overwhelming reports of discord and conflict about the DRC have not gone unnoticed by Musunka, who is often invited to speak at events about her work. She says that beyond Malaika, she would like to create a different image of Africa. 



“When I go on stage, I’m not Congolese, I’m proudly African. And, there are a lot of women who are doing [just] as well on the ground, but they don’t have the opportunity to come [and speak]. It is this woman that I’m representing.” 



Educating a girl child is important to her, as she would like to see the narrative and perception of African women change. “If you invest in a girl child she will be less likely to be affected by HIV. She will invest in her community. She will take care of her family, probably her country and her continent…” 



Musunka’s parting words to African women and girls are as follows: “Give 100% in everything that you do. This is our time. This is our call to stand, to have a place in society, and let’s have a voice. There’s a proverb, ‘if you go alone you don’t go far, but if you go together, you go far’.”

The New Wealth Creators is the first of its kind list by FORBES WOMAN AFRICA. Herein is a collection of female entrepreneurs on the African continent running businesses and social enterprises that are new, offbeat and radical.



These 20 women have been selected because they have created significant impact in their respective sectors by transforming a market or company, or innovating a product or service, and are pioneering their organization(s) in generating new untapped streams of income.

These women come from across the continent, from the villages and the suburbs, and are in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. They have all adopted sustainable development initiatives in one way or another to help solve Africa’s problems.



They may be wealth creators but their businesses, ironically, did not stem from a need to make money,&nbsp; but rather from the need to solve Africa’s persisting socio-economic challenges.



&nbsp;Economically empowering women has shown to boost productivity. It increases economic diversification and income equality, in addition to other positive developmental outcomes.

FORBES WOMAN AFRICA put in months of rigorous research, searching near and far for these inspirational entrepreneurs.



We took into account their business model, new ideas, potential, struggles, social impact, growth, influence, resilience and most importantly, their innovation.



Speaking to FORBES WOMAN AFRICA last year at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa’s Minister of Science and Technology, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, said: “Innovation [is] becoming the cornerstone for our economy going forward.”



As Africa’s population is reported to increase by 53% by 2100, according to the United Nations, new solutions must be created in order for us to keep up.

One question remains: can Africa translate its significant population growth into economic development, and invest this wealth to improve the quality of life?



Entrepreneurship could very well be the answer, or at least, one of the answers.



Last year, the Founder and Chair of the Alibaba Group Jack Ma paid Africa a visit to discuss tangible investment and technology development.



He encouraged African entrepreneurs to take giant leaps in solving the challenges facing the continent and to take advantage of the digital economy.

He said that opportunities lie where people complain.



And these women, through their businesses, have identified just that.



Vijay Tirathrai, director of the Techstars Dubai Accelerator, shared the same sentiments with FORBES WOMAN AFRICA.



“The new wealth creators, for me, are entrepreneurs who are very conscious about finding solutions in the market place, but from a lens of having social impact or having impacted the environment,” he says.



Tirathrai believes that while servicing consumers, new wealth creators are also “making a safer and a greener planet in the process, eliminating diseases, improving health conditions and advocating for equality for women”.

The goal was to bring together leading, influential women to share their ideas that are idea-focused, and on a wide range of subjects, to foster learning, inspiration and wonder – and provoke conversations that matter. The 2019 theme for the event was the “New Wealth Creators”.

HIV/AIDS remains a global concern. International star and Zimbabwean playwright Danai Gurira is using her celebrity to battle for its elimination.

A superhero on the big screen and now a possible superhero
in real life, actor and playwright, Danai Gurira, is making it her mission to
join the fight against HIV/AIDS.



She is known for playing General Okoye in one of last year’s
biggest films, Black Panther, which grossed over a billion dollars worldwide.



The famous Zimbabwean says the fight against the epidemic
has been evident in her life ever since she was a little girl.



Recently appointed a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, she chats to FORBES AFRICA about her work.

On December 3, 2018, a day after the Global Citizen Festival
where Gurira made an appearance as a co-host to rapturous applause from an
audience of 75,000 in Johannesburg, we meet her at an HIV clinic on the
outskirts of the city in a township called Tembisa. It’s a trial clinic called
Imbokodo for testing a combination of two experimental vaccines to prevent HIV.




At the clinic, Gurira meets with a group of women heading
it, to discuss and learn how the trials work. 



One of the women, dressed in a pink blouse, responsible for
creating the trial vaccine, talks to Gurira about their work. Maria Grazia Pau
is the Senior Director, Compound Development Team Leader, for the HIV vaccine
programs at Janssen.



&nbsp;Pau has over 18 years
of experience in the field of viral vectors.



“We have seen responses in the body systemically when we
check the blood but also we have checked other studies, and we do see responses
there,” she tells Gurira.



Everyone in the room pays attention.

“Right,” Gurira nods attentively.



“It is the answer to elimination,” Gurira says.



The group of women join in the conversation.



They may just be on a breakthrough to finding an HIV
vaccine.



The study is being conducted by the HIV Vaccine Trials
Network, Janssen Vaccines &amp; Prevention B.V., part of the Janssen
Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson &amp; Johnson, and all the participating
study clinics. 



These partners are working in collaboration with community
stakeholders to ensure this research is acceptable to the local community and
respectful of local cultures.



With 27 sites on the continent alone, they have clinics in
countries including Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. 



Gurira has recently collaborated with them to help further
their research and spread awareness about the disease.



Gurira was born in the United States (US) and later moved to
Zimbabwe, when she was a young girl.



Growing up in Harare, she saw and heard a number of stories
relating to HIV that touched her deeply. 



The 1980s were a time when the disease had started spreading
globally.



“I can’t really extricate my upbringing from understanding
how this epidemic hit southern Africa and how it changed the tapestry of life,”
she says.



The stigma around the disease and how women were treated
were some of the issues that concerned her.



“Growing up, I witnessed how it was affecting, not only
cultural dynamics, but also exacerbating issues around gender dynamics and
various things that filled me with great passion,” she says.



“How women were dealing with a great amount of stigma in the
family; if HIV was in the homestead, the involvement of even in-laws and how
that was being interpreted –&nbsp; about faulting
a woman. [As well as] blame imposed upon women and the loss of a spouse and how
that would affect how a woman was treated post that time. So there were a lot
of things affecting me as I grew up and as I watched these things happen.”



&nbsp;It was those personal
experiences that shaped how she viewed HIV and the importance of eradicating
it.



It was later that she moved back to the US and pursued a
career in psychology and then a masters in Fine Arts.



How people perceived HIV there, was not what she expected.



“Coming to the US and seeing how the African was viewed as a statistic; I was seeing real people with real stories and experiences who were truly people who had aspirations and careers and had many things going for them that they were working towards.”

At the time, antiretroviral (ARV) therapy had not yet been
introduced and there was no way to manage it.



“It was such a death sentence at the time,” she says.



“And to come to the US to find that what we were dealing
with in southern Africa was statistical, that also gave a great amount of need
to bridge that very unfortunate disconnect between the actual human experience
of it and the value of people who were being affected by this… and how they
were being viewed.”



While there, she connected with some of her friends who did
field work around the issue while she was more focused on her advocacy in the
field of arts.



She married her advocacy for HIV with her passion for the
arts.



Gurira began writing plays in an effort to use her strengths
as an actor, and tell stories about issues she felt strongly about.



She co-wrote and co-starred in In the Continuum, a play
about HIV/AIDS from the perspective of a married Zimbabwean woman.



With this play, her aim was to break away from the
“statistical component of how the African is viewed often”.



In December 2011, In the Continuum commemorated World AIDS
Day. 



Little did she know that was the beginning of her activism
against HIV/AIDS.



The ‘golden age’ of HIV science

The same year, a woman in South Africa by the name of Dr
Glenda Gray, was elected into the US Institute of Medicine, National Academies,
as a foreign associate for her research on preventing HIV-infected mothers from
passing the virus to their newborns.



She is a National Research Foundation A-rated scientist, CEO
and President of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC).



She is a qualified paediatrician and clinician and
co-founder of the internationally recognized Perinatal HIV Research Unit in
Soweto, South Africa.







In December 2018 on the same day of the interview, Gray and
Gurira meet at the Imbokodo clinic.



Gray is one of the leaders of the trials at the clinic. 



“We are in a golden age in terms of HIV science and hopeful about making huge advancements in HIV vaccine developments,” she says.



Much like Gurira, Gray was also confronted with the epidemic
at a young age. 



“As a young doctor, I saw HIV explode in my face and imagine
if we can, in my medical career, go from the beginning of an epidemic to the
end of an epidemic; that would be an amazing feat to be part of the team that
finds an HIV vaccine.” 



What Gray has endeavored to do is to find an HIV vaccine
that protects women and in the future, children and adolescents as well.

“We definitely are not going to be able to treat ourselves
out of this epidemic if we don’t find potent biomedical interventions, we are
not going to be able to turn off the tap,” she says.



Gray has dealt with innumerable women affected by HIV.



“I am sick and tired of HIV and I am sick and tired of how
it devastates lives and I am sick and tired of how it impacts women in Africa,”
Glenda says.



Gray, together with Dr Paul Stoffels, who is the head of
research and development for Johnson &amp; Johnson, have been trying to prove
HIV vaccines work.



Stoffels and his team have been working with HIV for more
than 25 years, developing ARV medication.



The medication has evolved from many pills a day to one a
day, he says.



“We are working on new medicines to bring it to an injectable to once every day to once every month. But we can treat HIV patients but they need to be treated for the rest of their lives,” he says.



“People can have normal life expectancy and live normal
lives with medicine but we won’t be able to stop the epidemic if we don’t get
to a vaccine.”

He says that the vaccine they have been working on has been
very active in animal models and they have now shifted to clinical trials in
humans to prove that it works.



“We are at a stage that we do the first efficacy study and
at the same time first we prove that it is safe and that it can be used by
people and then we prove that it is efficacious,” he says.



The people who become part of the vaccine study will be part
of the trial for years.



However, one of the challenges, he says they face is finding
people who are at risk to commit to being part of the long-term study.



Therefore, it is important to bring awareness to the public
about such studies being done.



“HIV prevention needs important people such as global stars
to step in and with Global Citizen, we had a perfect platform to be on the
global stage. And Danai is one of the people well known in Africa and she is
very committed to this objective and so we started collaborating with her to
bring the message of prevention, and also the message of importance of research
in getting to the HIV vaccines, in getting people to participate as well as to
stay on,” he says.



Other celebrities also known for the advocacy of HIV include
musician and actor Lady Gaga, musician Bono, television host Ellen DeGeneres
and musician Alicia Keys.



“What’s very important, I think, for a person like her
[Gurira] is to give the message of hope that one day we will be able to combat
the disease but at the same time, it is a message of ‘at this moment we need to
prevent’,” says Stoffels.



Gray agrees.



“She [Gurira] understands what it’s like to be a young
woman, she understands what it’s like to be a black young woman and how
difficult it is to navigate safe sex, masculinity, patriarchy and so she comes
with a lot of soul and insight.”



Eliminating the epidemic



After the release of In the Continuum, Gurira toured her play in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Through that, she was able to connect to a number of
organizations which she then got involved in.



“It not only allowed me to learn more but become more of a
vessel for advocacy and awareness,” Gurira says.



“It is really powerful to me that these women are here [at
the clinic] helming this study that could really eliminate this epidemic.



“There have been epidemics that have existed in past human
history that have been eliminated through vaccination and we could actually see
that come to pass. I am sitting on a site where this could come to pass for
HIV/AIDS, which is the epidemic of our time,” she says, hopeful.



“I’d like to see it eliminated.



“There are times when we tend to think that ‘oh HIV it is
being managed, and ARVs exist,’ and we forget that it is still a very active
fight.”



According to AVERT, an international HIV and AIDS charity,
in 2017, there were roughly 1.8 million new HIV infections, the same as in 2016
–&nbsp; about 5,000 new infections per day.



Therefore, Gurira says awareness is very important to avoid
the “issue fading in the background”.

Having been born in the US and being Zimbabwean, her fight
for HIV has become global.



&nbsp;Since her appointment
by the UN, she aims for a larger reach.



Gurira says despite women being the focus of her advocacy,
everyone, including men and boys, need to be a part of this fight.



“As Canadian Prime Minister [Justin] Trudeau recently said,
which I really appreciated, he called himself a feminist. He said, ‘I am a
feminist and to be feminist you believe in the equality of men and women and
you believe there is a lot of work to do to get to that place’.”



The fight against HIV continues to be a global phenomenon, but with more awareness raised and efforts from everyone, we could be one vaccine away from eliminating it.

Bettencourt Meyers, who is the 15th-richest person in the world, leads the women on the 2019 Forbes World’s Billionaires list.



 The granddaughter of L&#8217;Oréal’s founder Eugène Schueller (an inventor of hair dyes), and a member of the company’s board since 1997, Bettencourt Meyers debuted on the billionaires list last year following the death of her mother, Liliane Bettencourt, in September 2017. Liliane had been on the list every year since Forbes published its first World’s Billionaires List in 1987. 



Bettencourt Meyers’ fortune increased by $7.1 billion, or 17%, since last year thanks to stellar results at the makeup giant, of which she and her immediate family own a 33% stake.

An estimated 90% of her wealth is tied to shares of the company, which recorded its best sales growth in more than a decade last year with total revenue coming in at $30.6 billion. Revenue in Asia Pacific jumped 20%, driven by China; the region has now overtaken North America in terms of sales.



Bettencourt Meyers, who lives in Paris, is the president of her family’s Bettencourt Schueller Foundation. The philanthropic foundation encourages French progress in science and the arts, giving money and support to projects in life sciences, social progress and traditional crafts. 



The foundation has donated to projects including the research of neurons, support for families of autistic children and French choirs. She is also a writer and has authored a book on the Greek gods and another with commentary on the Bible.



While it’s Bettencourt Meyers’ first official year as richest woman, her name is no stranger to the spot. For the past decade, the world’s richest woman has either been a Bettencourt or Walton. In fact Bettencourt Meyers first overtook Alice Walton, last year’s richest woman, in March 2018, just days after we finalized our annual list.

Bettencourt Meyers’ mother Liliane Bettencourt, the daughter of L’Oréal founder Scheuller, spent most of her life working at L&#8217;Oréal; late in life she suffered from dementia. She and Walmart heiresses have taken turns holding the title of richest women for most of the past three-plus decades that Forbes has been tracking the wealthy. 



Liliane Bettencourt was the richest woman for most of the first 14 years Forbes published the billionaires’ list. In the years following 2001, she was overtaken some years by Walmart founder Sam Walton’s daughter Alice Walton and other years by Sam’s widow Helen Walton. Bettencourt took back the number one spot in 2006. She and Alice Walton’s sister-in-law Christy Walton took turns holding the title for the remainder of the past decade.



In 2010, buoyed by strong Walmart stock, Christy Walton, Sam Walton’s daughter-in-law, became the richest woman. Forbes understood at the time that she received the bulk of her husband John’s fortune when he died in a plane crash in 2005. 



She continued as the world’s richest woman for the next four years, but in 2015, previously sealed documents revealed that she had inherited just one-sixth of his fortune. Christy and John’s son, Lukas, received one-third of John Walton’s estate, while the rest went to charity.

In mid-November, Kylie Jenner marked a milestone moment with a visit to a strip mall. For the past three years, her Kylie Cosmetics had only sold its makeup online and briefly in pop up shops. 



But after signing an exclusive distribution deal with Ulta, the beauty retailer, Kylie Cosmetics was rolling its $29 lip kits—a matte liquid lipstick and matching lip liner—into Ulta’s 1,000-plus stores. 



And Jenner showed up to the Richmond Avenue Ulta in Houston to greet customers, sign autographs on lip kits and, of course, pose for selfies with her fans. 



Over the next six weeks, Kylie Cosmetics sold $54.5 million worth of products in Ulta, according to estimates from Oppenheimer. “I popped up at a few stores, I did my usual social media—I did what I usually do, and it just worked,” she says.

Fueled in part by the Ulta expansion, Kylie Cosmetics’ revenue climbed 9% last year to an estimated $360 million. With that kind of growth, and even using a conservative multiple from the booming makeup industry, Forbes estimates Jenner’s company is worth at least $900 million. She owns all of it. 



Add in the cash Jenner has already pulled from the profitable business, and the 21-year-old is now a billionaire, with an estimated fortune of $1 billion. She’s the youngest-ever self-made billionaire, reaching a ten-figure fortune at a younger age than even Mark Zuckerberg (who was 23 when he hit that mark).



“I didn’t expect anything. I did not foresee the future,” says Jenner, who is the youngest billionaire in the world. “But [the recognition] feels really good. That’s a nice pat on the back.”



The beauty of Kylie Cosmetics, which Jenner started in 2015, is its minuscule overhead—and the outsize profits that go straight into Jenner’s pocket. Her empire consists of just seven full-time and five part-time employees. Manufacturing and packaging is outsourced to Seed Beauty, a private-label producer in nearby Oxnard, California. Sales and fulfillment are handled by online merchant Shopify. 







Her shrewd mother, Kris, takes care of finance and PR in exchange for the 10% management fee she siphons from all of her kids. Marketing is done mostly through social media, where Jenner has a massive following. 



She announces product launches, previews new items and announces the Kylie Cosmetics shades she’s wearing directly to the 175 million-plus who follow her across Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

When Kylie Cosmetics launched in Ulta in 50 states, the reaction was a real-life version of the online rush Jenner created years earlier, when her initial kits sold out online in less than a minute. Ulta shoppers went wild. In some stores inventory was gone in hours. “It sold out faster than we planned,” admits Tara Simon, Ulta’s senior vice president of merchandising.



Ulta and Jenner are a sensible pairing. With Ulta’s mix of pricier prestige brands, like MAC Cosmetics, and cheaper selections, such as Nyx Professional Makeup, it has a larger footprint than that of its closest competitor, the more expensive Sephora. Analysts say Kylie Cosmetics is drawing younger customers through Ulta’s doors—teens who might not have a credit card to shop online. Plus, selling in physical stores gives Jenner a chance to reach “people that would never buy my products online,” she says. The ones who want to “see, touch and feel before they buy.”



Ulta provides access to a wide swath of America—more than just kids on the coasts—with stores across middle America. (It also has 714 more standalone stores than Sephora.) Ulta, meanwhile, gets a brand that requires no marketing push. So far, the retailer hasn&#8217;t spent a dime on traditional marketing to launch the brand in stores, which is “unheard of,” Simon says: “[Jenner’s] ability to communicate with well over 120 million people in a snap has a lot of power.”

“She did well online, but there’s only so far that that can take her,” says Shannon Coyne, an equity research analyst at BMO Capital Markets. “She probably realized: ‘If I want to get big, I’ve got to scale, and to do that, I need a partner.’ Ultimately, she wants to grow her brand, and she needs this store presence to do that.”



Indeed, Kylie Cosmetics has seen its growth slow rapidly lately. It went from essentially zero to $307 million in sales within a year of launching but managed only single-digit growth in 2017 and 2018, Forbes estimates. That’s despite adding 30 new products in 2017, including concealer and makeup brushes, and many more color combinations in 2018.



It’s not the first time Ulta’s breadth has helped propel a makeup entrepreneur. IT Cosmetics, cofounded in 2010 by Jamie Kern Lima, entered Ulta in 2012 and promptly grew to sales of $117 million by 2014. In August 2016, L’Oréal paid $1.2 billion in cash for it.



Would Jenner ever follow a similar route? She firmly dismisses the idea of a sale. But her mother is interested. “It’s always something that we’re willing to explore,” Kris told Forbes last year.



For now, Jenner is focused on expanding her product range to include a setting powder, and bringing eyeshadows, powders and bronzers to Ulta. “I see [Kylie Cosmetics] going very far,” Jenner says. “I work really hard.”



Whatever happens next, one thing is certain. Jenner will share it all on social media, much to the delight of her tens of millions of fans.



She is, after all, the first selfie-made billionaire.

Naomi Campbell makes her first appearance at the Forbes Woman Africa Leading Woman Summit saying that she is passionate about promoting the continent.

In the coastal city in Eastern South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province, it is all hands on deck at the International Convention Centre (ICC), in Durban.



There’s a buzz in the air, and it is not the sound of the warm summer waves hitting the coast line, it is the chatter of Forbes Woman Africa’s most anticipated event, the annual Leading Woman Summit.



It takes place on March 8, in celebration of International Women’s Day.



It is expected
to host over 500 people and on the agenda, women are in the forefront.



The headlining
speaker is supermodel, philanthropist and cultural innovator, Naomi Campbell.



She has just traveled in straight from Paris and told media at the ICC that she couldn’t wait to be part of the Summit.

“This is my second time at a Forbes Woman Summit, but I am especially happy to be here,” she said.



Campbell who is
very passionate about the African continent said that she is all for supporting
Africa.



“Africa means a lot to me, and right now I feel that it is a time where in my industry that this continent is recognized by the fashion industry in having their footprint here,” she said.

Campbell said
she is particularity interested in the tech, fashion, business, music, culture,
architecture industries.



“[I’m] not
afraid to approach anyone on these subjects in trying to open their minds to
see that they need to recognize that this continent is one of the leading
continents in the world,” she added.



When asked what makes the Summit different, Methil Renuka, FORBES WOMAN AFRICA and FORBES AFRICA editor said the event is much bigger this year.



“In terms of scale and magnitude it is big, and also in terms of both the panelists, the speakers of the day, and also the audience. So we have the best people coming, the CEO’s and all the top women from the industry,” she said.



The event, which is hosted in Durban for the first time, also has a lot to offer the coastal city.

honorary granddaughter of Nelson Mandela.



EThekwini Mayor
Zanele Gumede said “the agenda is clear, this summit is a platform to celebrate
female excellence while we inspire, empower and unite as women.” 



Gumede also told
Campbell to visit more tourist attractions around the province.



One notable site would be the Mandela Capture site, where he was captured 56 years ago.

There for it is
only fitting that Campbell, the honorary granddaughter is to speak at the

Meet Amy. And also Debbie, Inga, Mia, Erica, Eva and Cora. 



These aren’t the members of a new, all-female rock group, but names that several large banks have been giving to their automated digital assistants. 



So-called chatbots have become a useful cost-cutting tools for companies with large subscriber bases (think banks, insurance firms and mobile phone operators). As they replace human call-center workers, such bots will help save banks an estimated $7.3 billion in operational costs by 2023, Juniper Research predicts. 



But the proliferation of bots with female names raises questions about whether they might also perpetuate gender stereotypes, particularly around the notion of women in the role of assistants. That criticism has already been levelled at Amazon’s digital assistant Alexa and Apple’s Siri. 



Now a Forbes analysis of Europe’s 10 biggest banks ranked by assets shows that at least three have deployed chatbots with female names on their websites and apps. HSBC has a chatbot named Amy; Deutsche Bank&#8217;s Debbie helps market traders; ING of the Netherlands has Inga, a chatbot that will &#8220;respond with empathy&#8221; to customer problems such as losing a card.



ING&#8217;s other chatbot Marie, available to retail customers on Facebook Messenger, was given the name &#8220;because it conjures up an image of someone who is helpful and friendly,&#8221; Tim Daniels, a programme manager for ING was quoted as saying on the bank&#8217;s website. (ING has a male chatbot named Bill, aimed at dealing with corporate customers.)



Among the other lenders, Santander, Barclays and Societe Generale appear to have unnamed chatbot assistants. Credit Agricole has an internal chatbot with a male name: Hector. 



Female chatbots abound in other regions and industries. Bank of America recently deployed a digital assistant called Erica, while Mia, the chatbot released by Australian digital bank UBank, was described by the company earlier this month as “empathetic,” “fun” and “a little bit cheeky.” 



IPSoft, a New York-based software company that sells chatbot technology to banks like Sweden’s SEB as well as mobile network giant Vodafone, has its own white-label version of a customer-facing chatbot, named Amelia.



IPSoft’s CEO Chetan Dube denied that the chatbot’s name perpetuated stereotypes, when asked by Forbes during an interview in December, and said it instead highlights “the thought leadership that is represented in females.&#8221;



&#8220;She was the first female aviator that tried to go around the world,” Dube added, referring to the 1930&#8217;s aviator Amelia Earhart. 



Forbes revealed earlier this month that Vodafone was measuring the success of its chatbots on how many staff could be replaced by the software. While that may be an uncomfortable metric, the more worrying consequence of chatbots, according to four industry experts questioned by Forbes, is the risk that they could reinforce certain stereotypes.



“Gender bias is an increasingly serious issue in chatbot design, especially for voice-based chatbots,” says John Taylor, CEO of action.ai, a British startup that makes chatbot software for banks and travel companies. “These assistants often perform tasks that many view as menial.” 



Vitor Shereiber, a language specialist at the German language-learning app Babbel, says that focus-group testing might lead companies to assign a gender to a chatbot on the notion that it makes customer feel more comfortable. 



But, he adds, bots could spread unrealistic expectations of how women should present themselves professionally, just as photoshopped pictures have done for women’s perceptions of their bodies.



Part of the challenge for companies is finding a balance between automating customer service without putting customers off. PwC recently described chatbots as being able to “massively enhance customer delight and loyalty” because of their “personal touch.” 



Taylor suggests software designers should try creating more chatbots with male names and male voices. 



On the sidelines of a technology conference in London on Wednesday, Seth Juarez, an artificial-intelligence engineer based in Redmond, Washington takes it a step further. He calls Siri up on is iPhone to ask the time, and a male voice responds. 



“I make it a guy specifically because I find it morally reprehensible that all of the service-based bots are female, and all the intelligence based bots [like IBM’s Watson] are named after dudes.” 



He added that artificial intelligence generally shouldn’t be anthropomorphised. Chatbots should be used to manage &#8220;cheap thoughts,&#8221; or “stuff that a human would do robotically” rather than on more complex issues. “I would leave those problems to humans.”

Banks Are Promoting ‘Female’ Chatbots To Help Customers, Raising Concerns Of Stereotyping

Preparation is key for having a successful a job interview. What you do the night before a job interview has an impact on your interview. What can you do to make sure this impact is a positive one?



1.Get a good night’s sleep.



Getting a good night’s sleep is the most important thing you can do before an interview. When you’re well rested, you’re more alert and focused, and you won’t have to resort to caffeine or sugar to stay awake. Being sleep deprived can also increase feelings of stress or anxiety, neither of which is helpful going into a job interview.



Of course, it can be hard to sleep because you’re anxious about the interview. If you find yourself having trouble getting to sleep, try a relaxation exercise like meditation or yoga. Whatever you do, take your mind off of the interview – overthinking it is most likely what’s keeping you awake.

2.Review your resume and cover letter.



Review your resume and cover letter, as well as any answers to questions you might have filled out on the job application. Focus on key statistics you’ve listed, major accomplishments, and relevant skills. This is especially important if you’re applying to multiple positions and sending out different versions of your resume and cover letter.



By reviewing your documents, they’ll be fresh in your mind and you’ll be able to answer any questions relating to them quickly. This shows the hiring manager that you are confident, both in your abilities and in the interview itself. If you have to think too hard about a question relating to your resume or cover letter, it could signal to the hiring manager that you weren’t truthful on your application and raise a red flag.



3.Prepare a list of questions to ask.



Asking questions is one the most critical things you must do in a job interview, so it’s important to prepare some questions in advance. By having a few questions already prepared, you won’t draw a blank when the hiring manager asks you. Great questions to ask inquire about the company culture, job responsibilities, or what a typical day looks like. Review the job description to see if there’s anything from there that you’d like clarified. This will often be covered during the interview, but if not, you’ll be ready to ask about it.



4.Plan out your route.



Plan out your route and how long it will take you to get to the interview location. If you’re driving, consider traffic conditions and weather that could cause delays. If you’re taking public transportation, check to make sure that the subway or buses are running on schedule and nothing has changed due to planned work. If you’re doing a video interview, plan out your location, and check your video and microphone to make sure they work.



Always leave yourself a minimum of 30 extra minutes, regardless of how you’re getting to the interview. If you’re early, you can find a nearby cafe or just sit in your car and relax. Nothing is worse than stressing about being late, except for actually being late. Avoid both of those things by leaving much earlier than you think you need to. For a video interview, get yourself set up 15 minutes early.



5.Plan what you’re going to wear.



Deciding what you’re going to wear in advance takes one less thing off of your mind in the morning and allows you to focus your energy on more important things. Make sure your clothes are free of wrinkles, stains, and pet hair. You can also pack your bag the night before, so that all you have to do is grab it and go in the morning.



By starting your interview preparations the night before, you&#8217;ll be able to focus fully on the interview itself during the day and put 100% of your energy into it.

Caster Semenya has released a list of experts she will call in her appeal hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) this week in her fight against regulations aimed at lowering the testosterone levels of hyperandrogenic athletes like her. 



The South African 800-metres double Olympic champion on Monday expressed her disappointment after the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) revealed the names of their five witnesses for the proceedings in Lausserne.



She called it a breach of confidentiality rules ahead of a five-day appeal that could have far reaching consequences for sport. The IAAF deny any wrong-doing.



She will call on a range of experts from various fields, and used the announcement of their names, through her lawyers, to reiterate her stance on the IAAF’s proposed regulations.

“The IAAF regulations do not empower anyone,” the statement said. “Rather, they represent yet another flawed and hurtful attempt to police the sex of female athletes.



“Ms Semenya’s courage and perseverance in her fight to run free is an inspiration to young athletes in her home country of South Africa and around the globe.”



The IAAF regulations stipulate that women with elevated testosterone take medication to reduce their level before being allowed to compete, but only in the middle-distance events of between 400- and 1500-metres where it is claimed the advantage is most felt.



IAAF President Sebastian Coe told reporters on Monday that the regulations are aimed at leveling the field between hyperandrogenic athletes and those with normal levels of testosterone.



The IAAF’s previous attempts to regulate testosterone in female athletes fell foul of a CAS ruling in 2015 following an appeal on behalf of Indian Dutee Chand, who had been banned from competing because of her high levels.



CAS claimed in their judgment that the IAAF had not provided sufficient evidence that hyperandrogenic athletes gained a significant advantage due to their testosterone count.



A verdict could take up to a month, according to CAS.
