In Nyarutarama, Kigali’s upscale neighborhood, the sun rises over the lush green landscape, casting a warm hue and carrying the fresh scent of cut grass in the air. A gentle breeze sways the flags adorned with partner company logos, decorating the surroundings of the newly-opened, modern 18-hole golf course, Kigali Golf Resort &amp; Villas, which offers a premium experience for both local and international golfers.&nbsp;



The prestigious golf course played host to the CNBC Africa Corporate Golf Tournament Rwanda for the inaugural Rwanda Golf Day on September 12, 2024, organized by the ABN Group. The event brought together key players from Rwanda’s corporate community, including Rwanda’s Central Bank Governor, John Rwangombwa, CVL’s Jack Kayonga, Trinity Metals&#8217; Peter Geleta, the Rwanda Stock Exchange’s (RSE) Celestin Rwabukumba, and many more influential figures.&nbsp;

After 17 successful years of hosting the event in South Africa, this was the first time the tournament was organized by ABN outside of South Africa. ABN Group Chairman Rakesh Wahi explained that the event was part of ABN&#8217;s broader strategy to bring businesses together through golf, fostering valuable networking opportunities.&nbsp;



“CNBC Africa was established in Rwanda nine years ago, and we have been sharing Rwanda’s development success story with the world. As business continues to grow, it’s important to bring the regional business community together — not just to discuss business, but also to connect through sporting activities. There’s no better way to do this than through golf. Kigali is the second city to host this event, and we plan to expand it further,” said Wahi.&nbsp;&nbsp;



The tournament drew more than 70 participants from leading companies in Rwanda, who teed off alongside Wahi and Denham Pons, CNBC Africa’s Head of East Africa. Among the key sponsors was Trinity Metals. It’s CEO, Geleta, highlighted the importance of participating in the tournament: “We’ve only been operating in Rwanda for two and a half years, and this event provides an opportunity to connect with our business partners and support the growth of the mining industry in Africa.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



Diane Mukunde of NCBA Bank Rwanda, another major sponsor of the day, emphasized how the tournament offered a unique opportunity to build closer relationships with clients, while MTN Rwanda’s Head of Enterprise Business, Didas Ndoli, pointed out the value of corporate engagement: “We’re pleased to partner with CNBC Africa for this golf event. It’s an excellent platform to engage with our VIP customers.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



Other sponsors of the event included I&amp;M Bank, SKOL Brewery and Kivu Noir, all contributing to the event&#8217;s success. The tournament, held in a four-ball format, saw 18 teams competing across the course’s 18 holes. Starting at 8AM, these executives-turned-semi-professional golfers battled the elements, sinking aces and eagles while navigating tricky bunker shots. Rwangombwa expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m looking forward to an enjoyable game, and of course, I hope to win something today.”&nbsp;



As the day progressed, players enjoyed refreshments at the halfway house, re-energizing for the rest of the competition. The RSE’s Rwabukumba enjoyed the mix of networking and sport, remarking, “Everyone wants to win, but I’m also enjoying meeting industry leaders in a relaxed environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The event concluded at 2PM, with teams submitting their scorecards and preparing for the gala awards ceremony at Kigali Serena Hotel. The dinner was attended by notable figures including Rwanda Development Board (RDB) CEO Francis Gatare, Rwanda’s former Ambassador to South Africa Vincent Karega, Rwanda&#8217;s Minister of State in charge of National Treasury Richard Tusabe, and I&amp;M Bank CEO Benjamin Mutimura.&nbsp;



In his welcome speech, CNBC Africa’s Pons thanked the participants and sponsors for their support and reiterated the ABN Group’s commitment to telling the East Africa story. Geleta also highlighted the reason behind his company’s sponsorship of the event: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase Rwanda’s mining potential and put it on the global map.”&nbsp;



In his keynote speech, RDB’s Gatare praised the ABN Group for organizing the event and promoting business in Rwanda: “It’s vital to have business leaders like Rakesh Wahi and the ABN Group encouraging the use of this remarkable golf course. Sports tourism is central to our strategy to grow Rwanda as a leading tourism destination.”&nbsp;



The night ended with the presentation of awards. Dries Grobler won the Longest Drive award, while James Mureithi took home the Nearest to the Pin prize. The team of Robert Bafakulera, Kenneth Murangira, Innocent Rutamu and Ras Tinyinondi emerged as group champions with a score of 80 points.&nbsp;

CrossBoundary Energy has secured a $140 million senior debt commitment from the Standard Bank Group on a fully underwritten basis.



The transaction between CrossBoundary Energy and the Standard Bank Group highlights the potential role of commercial funders in supporting the adoption of renewable energy solutions by businesses across Africa.



The financing is being undertaken as a first tranche within a broader mandate with the Standard Bank Group, which has been appointed to lead and arrange up to $300 million senior debt to support the scaling of CrossBoundary Energy’s renewable energy portfolio serving Commercial and Industrial (C&amp;I) clients across Africa.



CrossBoundary Energy was supported by Cygnum Capital acting as exclusive financial adviser, and by Bracewell (U.K.) LLP as borrower’s counsel. Trinity International LLP acted as lenders’ counsel on the transaction.



In Africa, access to reliable and affordable power is one of the largest impediments to business growth. While service providers can solve this, access to finance remains an immense barrier to companies accessing that power. The IEA estimates that the energy transition <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/scaling-up-private-finance-for-clean-energy-in-emerging-and-developing-economies/executive-summary">will require $160 billion annual </a>investment between 2026—2030 to align with climate goals, the bulk of which will come from the private sector.

Driving Africa’s Wealth Through Health 

As the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded, healthcare professionals worldwide found themselves in uncharted territory. For Dr Siyamak Saleh, a frontline worker based in South Africa, TikTok began as an escape from the stress of treating patients during those challenging days.



Fast forward to today, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@doctor.siya">Dr Siyamak Saleh</a>, or Dr Siya, as he’s known on TikTok, has turned his digital media presence into an influential tool for health education, reaching millions across the globe with vital information on mental health, sexual health, and reproductive rights.



What started as an outlet for fun videos quickly transformed into a platform for addressing critical health topics. Dr Saleh now holds a partnership with the <a href="https://www.who.int/">World Health Organization (WHO)</a>, amplifying accurate health information to combat the rampant misinformation that pervades the internet.



“TikTok has been a transformative platform for reaching a diverse and global audience,” he explains.



“With its ability to make complex health topics accessible to millions, it’s become a tool for positive change, especially in destigmatizing discussions around mental health.”



Shifting Focus to Mental Health Advocacy



One of the areas where Dr Saleh has found his niche is mental health, an issue that is often clouded by stigma. Through his TikTok platform, which boasts over 2.7 million followers, he has addressed various aspects of mental well-being, tackling topics like depression, anxiety, and stress management.



“In my videos, I aim to break down the complexities of mental health into everyday language,” he says.



“I want to help people recognize that mental health is as important as physical health. Through TikTok, I’m able to create a space where people feel comfortable engaging with these difficult conversations.”

“I talked about how many people with depression hide their struggles behind smiles, and it really struck a chord with my audience. It reminded people that mental health struggles aren’t always visible.”



Partnership with the WHO and Expanding Health Education



The WHO quickly recognized the potential in Dr Saleh’s content, particularly during the height of the pandemic.



His ability to simplify health guidelines and translate complex medical advice into digestible and relatable content led to him being featured in international media outlets like HuffPost and Good Morning America.



“My partnership with WHO allows me to amplify reliable, evidence-based information on a global scale. Together, we’re closing the gap between public health knowledge and the communities that need it the most,” he says.



For Dr Saleh, the WHO partnership underscores a new chapter in his career. No longer just a practicing doctor in underserved communities, he now sees himself as a global health educator.



“The transition to working with the WHO has allowed me to make a larger impact. I can address misinformation directly and connect people to the resources they need.”



Balancing Medicine and Content Creation



Juggling the demands of a medical career with a growing presence on TikTok requires careful time management. Dr Saleh emphasizes that setting boundaries and maintaining a routine are crucial not only for his professional responsibilities but also for his mental well-being.



“I make sure to prioritize my mental health by taking breaks and spending time with my family. This balance is essential in ensuring that I continue to create impactful content without burning out,” he shares.



His content creation process revolves around rigorous research.



“Accuracy is at the core of what I do. I spend hours researching each topic to make sure I’m providing the most reliable and up-to-date information,” he explains, crediting evidence-based guidelines from sources like the WHO to ensure his content is trustworthy.



The Power of TikTok and the Change Makers Program



Dr Saleh’s journey from frontline doctor to global health educator is emblematic of the power of TikTok as a force for social good. As part of the <a href="https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-africa/making-a-difference-in-africa-through-the-tiktok-change-makers-program">TikTok Change Makers Program</a>, he is among a cohort of creators using the platform to drive meaningful impact. The program connects creators with organizations like the WHO and provides the resources they need to expand their reach.



An integral component of the TikTok Change Makers Program is the TikTok Change Makers Grant, which provides over $1 million to more than 30 non-profit organizations worldwide, supporting essential social causes.



To honor Dr Saleh’s contributions, TikTok will allocate a $25,000 donation to the WHO, enhancing both Dr Saleh’s mission and the WHO’s work in making reliable health information accessible to underserved communities globally.



“The Change Makers Program has given me the opportunity to not only continue my work but also deepen my commitment to combating misinformation and promoting health literacy,” he says.



“We are pleased to collaborate with TikTok and content creators worldwide on the TikTok Change Makers Program,” says Dr Alain Labrique, Director of the Department of Digital Health and Innovation at the World Health Organization (WHO).



“By leveraging our combined strengths, we can broaden our reach to communities globally, addressing health and other critical issues affecting people. This program enables us to connect with wider audiences, fostering creativity for meaningful advocacy and health communication.”



A Vision for the Future



Looking ahead, Dr Saleh remains focused on using his platform to drive social change. He hopes to inspire other healthcare professionals to embrace digital media and use it as a tool for education and advocacy.



“TikTok has allowed me to connect with millions of people I never would have reached otherwise. I’m excited to continue growing this community and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in health education.”



As he continues his journey, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for digital platforms to shape the future of global health.

Growing up in Mombasa, Kenya, the most advanced technology we had access to in schools was scientific calculators.&nbsp; Fast forward to a post-pandemic world where Education Technology (EdTech) has taken center stage in education; learners can continue learning when classes are disrupted, teachers are temporarily unavailable and can even research school topics ahead of time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



Over the last 17 years, having worked with policy makers, educators, and other stakeholders in integrating technology to make education more inclusive, I have become a crusader for EdTech.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The work we do at the Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning includes supporting EdTech stakeholders on policy and thought leadership on best practices that can strengthen our education ecosystems in Africa.&nbsp;



A question frequently asked is, ‘what has influenced the change in technology in the education space, especially in Africa?’ First, the change in the youth population in Africa has doubled in the last 40 years and, by 2030 it is expected to represent over 40% of the world’s youth numbers.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Second, with the burgeoning youth population, the jobs market is shifting exponentially with a significant shift towards service-oriented jobs.&nbsp; Gone are the days when, excelling in a specific field guaranteed employment.&nbsp; In 2024, even human precision jobs, such as medical surgeries, are under threat from robotics. This highlights the need to equip learners with broad, adaptable skills to stay agile in shifting job markets.&nbsp;



Unfortunately, education resources in Africa today cannot keep up with the increased number of learners and the dynamic jobs landscape.&nbsp; This has given rise to innovations in technology to address gaps in access to quality education.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The rapid and daily evolution of technology has played an influential role in how EdTech is found in some form in almost every learner’s and educator’s life.&nbsp; In Africa, despite infrastructure challenges, EdTech has leapfrogged, rapidly expanding access to education through mobile and digital platforms, such as the Eneza Education platform, one of the first Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellows. Users of their platform can access educational content through phones via a USSD code for as low as two cents a day.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



With <a href="https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1124918.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smartphone penetration at 50% in 2023</a>, about 650 million mobile phone users have mobile-based learning as a primary mode of EdTech adoption.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Even with a very innovative, locally-developed EdTech ecosystem in Africa, to the number of learners who constantly use EdTech is still very low.&nbsp; And one of the primary reasons for this is that countries have not adopted policies that can support the idea of learners and teachers using technology to improve the relevance and quality of education.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



For EdTech to flourish in Africa, policy alignment is crucial to ensure that digital initiatives are sustainable, inclusive, and aligned with broader educational goals. The role of policymakers is to drive initiatives, invest in infrastructure, and set standards that encourage innovation and make digital learning an integral part of Africa’s educational landscape.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



A well guided, multi stakeholder and data driven EdTech policy can plan the country’s ecosystem to address access to quality education by all, and above all prepare learners for emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well skill them for jobs of the future.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



It should also be intentional to tackle the problem of inclusivity: ensure access to education and technology to all learners irrespective of gender, equity disparities, disabilities, in displaced communities and above all, out of school youth.&nbsp; Indeed, cross-sectoral policy that enables innovation, was one the three recommendations that was agreed upon as top priority by ministers and ministry representatives from 18 countries across Africa at the 2024 Mastercard Foundation 3rd Ministerial Forum in Abuja, Nigeria.&nbsp; The <a href="https://mastercardfdn.org/all/centre-for-innovative-teaching-and-learning-in-ict/mastercard-foundation-edtech-conference-in-abuja-ends-with-10-recommendations-for-delivering-the-future-of-learning-in-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recommendations</a> emerged from a collective call to action from the inaugural Mastercard Foundation EdTech Conference.&nbsp;



My earlier experience in supporting the drafting of ICT in education policies, was that the subsequent implementation of the polices became a government-only domain.&nbsp; This often resulted in a one-size-fits-all approach with multi-millions spent but with minimal impact.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Months or years after the projects have commenced, devices remain unopened in their original packaging. This observation is not restricted to one country in Africa, but observers from several countries have reported the same.&nbsp; It stems from a belief that with a minimum effort of device usage, and access to internet, content and basic training, classrooms will magically transform into models of 21st century learning.&nbsp; It’s like a classroom of 50 students where the teacher moves at the pace of the brightest pupil.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Until governments stop implementing EdTech in isolation from the broader education ecosystem, success is doomed to be minimal.&nbsp;



The massive learning losses experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic changed the mindsets of many governments.&nbsp; At the Mastercard Foundation 2nd Ministerial Forum held in 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda, almost all ministers and ministerial representatives from 15 countries across Africa agreed on two main courses of action.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



First call was to instill resilience in education to withstand future shocks like the pandemic.&nbsp; This means adopting hybrid learning models that blend in-person and online education to enhance accessibility, engagement, and personalized learning experiences. The second call emphasized that, given the colossal task ahead, governments would require support from both public and private stakeholders, spanning from policy revision to implementation of hybrid models.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The Deputy Minister from the Department of Basic Education in South Africa, Dr. Reginah Mhaule, even went on to say that the many corrective measures they had undertaken to overcome the learning losses, would be lost now that classrooms were resuming, unless captured in a new policy.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



So, what should an EdTech policy development process look like?&nbsp; At the onset of a policy drafting process, it is important to outline a few objectives, or a “north star”, otherwise the policy will not be measurable nor provide a direction or a unifying vision.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The objective could vary by country context, such as building a digitally empowered workforce for Africa’s future or simply providing universal access to quality digital education.&nbsp; The latter objective reminds me of a matter-of-fact statement made by a teacher when I visited a public school in peri-urban Cape Town, South Africa, in 2022: “the young learners are surrounded by all forms of technology the moment they step out of the school, so if we exclude technology in the classroom, we will lose their interest to study”.&nbsp;



While the policy will be owned by the government, it should be very inclusive and incorporate the input from all the stakeholders: the EdTech community, development partners, the users such as teachers, parents and, above all, the young people.&nbsp; It should be cross-sector collaborated and decisions taken must be supported by data and evidence.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



In 2023, through our work at the Mastercard Foundation in partnership with the World Bank, I had the opportunity to enable this inclusive process when supporting the Ministries of Education in Rwanda and Ethiopia to draft an EdTech policy and an ICT in education policy, respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The Rwanda draft policy emerged from an EdTech strategy created after an <a href="https://mastercardfdn.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/EdTech-Landscape-in-Rwanda-Summary.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EdTech Landscape study</a> was carried out in the country.&nbsp; The study commissioned by the Mastercard Foundation provided data as a starting point for the strategy.&nbsp; In Ethiopia, the policy that that is now approved, has unfolded further opportunities for support from the World Bank for its implementation.&nbsp; In 2025, through the Mastercard Foundation Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning, we are planning to support National EdTech Strategies in Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.&nbsp;



Finally, even a well drafted policy is not a means to an end.&nbsp; At the Mastercard Foundation 3rd Ministerial Forum on EdTech in Africa, Albert Nsengiyumva, Executive Secretary of the Association of Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) said a policy will only be as effective as the resources allocated to implement it. I will add to this that there needs to be clear guidelines on the sense of ownership on who does what for the various aspects of the policy: digital infrastructure and access, content, teachers capacity building and skilling, etc.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



With the right attitude and stewardship, we can all come together to improve the education outcomes and skills of youth in Africa.&nbsp; Education, after all, is everyone’s business.&nbsp;

Building Africa’s Future: Why EdTech Needs Policy Support 

The global data center industry has emerged as a cornerstone of the digital age, facilitating the storage, processing, and management of vast amounts of data.



As businesses and individuals increasingly adopt advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud-based solutions and edge computing, the demand for robust data centers is growing exponentially.



Over the past decade, the global data center industry has witnessed unprecedented growth. Valued at $93.7 billion in 2023, the market is projected to maintain a strong growth trajectory with a CAGR of approximately 22% from 2018 to 2025.



As digital transformation becomes a strategic imperative across various sectors, the need for secure, scalable, and reliable data storage and processing solutions has and will continue to skyrocket. Concerns about data privacy, data nationalism and data localization requirements further accelerate digital transformation initiatives, driving demand for local data centers.



In Africa, the industry, though still in its infancy, is rapidly growing and evolving, propelled by the continent’s burgeoning digital economy and its ability to leapfrog basic services through technological innovation.



The increasing access to the internet and data usage, primarily via mobile phones, is fueling a digital revolution, positioning Africa as the next frontier of the global data center industry.



We continue seeing strong demand fundamentals that favor Africa as a destination for data centers. Growing interest from the major global cloud service providers such as AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft, along with content delivery network providers over the last few years continues to drive demand for data center infrastructure.



Enterprise demand from governments and private companies migrating their servers to third-party leased space, as well as demand from connectivity providers, are also significantly increasing demand. Many global, pan-African, and local data center operators are recognizing this potential and are now investing in building robust data centre ecosystems to meet the growing demand for digital services.



For example, Equinix has invested $160 million into its first facility in South Africa that will offer 1,860 square meters of rack space with 4MW of IT load. Similarly, it also acquired MainOne, a West African data center provider. This acquisition allowed Equinix to expand its presence in Africa and leverage MainOne’s established infrastructure to strengthen its position in the region.



Africa Data Centres, one of the largest Pan-African operators on the continent, has various facilities in Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, in Lagos, Nigeria, and in Nairobi in Kenya, and continues to have a strong pipeline of expansion sites.



Digital Realty, another key player in the global data center industry, finalized a deal to acquire a majority stake in Teraco, an African data center provider with multiple facilities across South Africa. Private equity firms have likewise been actively involved in data center investments across Africa. Notable names include Actis and Helios Investment Partners, who have invested in several data center projects across the continent.



However, the region faces challenges due to insufficient infrastructure investment, high temperatures requiring advanced cooling systems and late adoption, resulting in a disproportionate capacity gap.



The African data center colocation market also remains highly concentrated in a few countries, namely South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and Kenya representing majority of the available white space. South Africa is the largest market in Africa, with approximately 300MW of live supply and accounting for around 70% of the continent’s IT load.



South Africa, with its advanced telecommunications infrastructure, strategic geographic location, and robust regulatory environment, stands as a prime destination for data center investments in Africa, serving as a hub for the region.



The country boasts a vibrant digital ecosystem, a growing tech-savvy population, a strong financial sector, and has various initiatives promoting the Information and Communications industry. Favorable land prices (compared to other countries on the continent and in developed markets), connectivity and



infrastructure make it an attractive choice for hyperscale tenants expanding their operations across the continent, therefore driving demand for data center infrastructure in-country.



Despite this potential, several country specific challenges could inhibit growth. These include energy supply issues and costs, other environmental concerns such as cooling and water consumption, security concerns including crime, the construction mafia and cybersecurity, and a shortage of skilled labor.



International and local data center operators continue to express strong interest in investing in Africa, particularly South Africa, with demand remaining robust. However, establishing strategic public-private partnerships is crucial for fostering industry growth and addressing current challenges.



These initiatives may include investments in renewable energy sources which can support both a reduction in power costs and environmental impact of these facilities, enhanced security measures deployed to building sites as well as innovation and skills development by educational institutions.



The demand for cloud-computing and data centers in Africa plays a crucial role in driving digital transformation. Businesses benefit from increased processing speeds, reduced latency, and enhanced reliability, leading to improved operational efficiency and contributing to the digital success of organizations, ultimately resulting in improved service delivery and enhanced user experiences.

Q. How will Orange Money users benefit from having access to Mastercard’s global network, and what kind of opportunities will this unlock for them, particularly in underserved communities?



Kane:  Many people might associate Mastercard with international payments and upscale stores in city centers. With this mindset, one might question the relevance of this service for underserved communities. While this perception holds some truth, it overlooks hundreds of practical use cases tailored to the needs of communities currently excluded from the financial system, such as rural populations, students, retirees, and others. These include withdrawing cash from secure ATMs available 24/7, accessing online training content, promoting a local business through sponsored Facebook pages to expand its reach, paying for digital content produced abroad, or ordering supplies from distant providers.



These are highly tangible use cases where the partnership between Orange Money and Mastercard proves to be an ideal fit. Based on our experience in a few pilot markets, all it takes is offering a simple solution and a few use cases for people to embrace it and adopt practices far beyond what we could have anticipated.



Q. Could you share insights on how this partnership will drive economic growth in these regions, especially with respect to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)? 



Ajmal: SMEs are the backbone of Africa’s economy, driving job creation, innovation, and regional resilience. Through our partnership with Orange, SMEs now gain digital tools that open new markets and foster growth. This partnership provides SMEs with more ways to transact securely and reach a wider customer base, which is critical for their sustainability and scalability. Imagine a small business in Mali that previously relied only on cash transactions — now, with digital payments, they can streamline their sales, reduce cash-handling risks, and even build a transaction history that opens doors to microcredit.



Access to digital transactions also translates to data, which is invaluable for these businesses. SMEs gain insights into spending patterns and customer preferences, which helps them make more informed decisions.



At Mastercard, we are excited about these growth possibilities and the opportunities this partnership unlocks for African entrepreneurs to thrive, innovate, and grow.



Q. How do you envision this collaboration contributing to reducing the gap between formal banking and mobile financial services in Africa?



Kane:&nbsp; Bank penetration rates are still relatively low and vary from region to region, from 20% in Sub-Saharan countries to 60% in the Maghreb.



Around 100 million Africans, long excluded from the banking system, have opened an Orange Money account. It’s a major change: from anywhere, you can put your money safely in your Orange Money account, send it to whomever you like, pay for your shopping, your car registration sticker or your children’s schooling, and so on.



However, mobile money sometimes hits a glass ceiling. As usage grows, customers who rely on Orange Money as their primary account may encounter certain limitations. For instance, while they might receive their salary in their Orange Money account and use it daily for their purchases, they may find themselves unable to make online payment on international websites such as Facebook or Netflix, withdraw from an ATM or use their wallet when they travel abroad. These services are currently reserved for holders of bank accounts—accounts that are not accessible to everyone due to barriers such as minimum deposits, required documents, travel to branches, or monthly fees.



This partnership allows the Orange Money wallet to go further, breaking the ceiling on usage and bringing it closer to the capabilities of a full bank account, while maintaining the simplicity and accessibility that makes it available to the widest possible audience. Customers will no longer have to choose, especially when the banking option isn’t available to them. Their everyday account will meet all their new needs.



Q. How do you see this partnership evolving in the future to further advance Africa’s digital and financial transformation?



Kane:&nbsp; The partnership may evolve to include additional countries and financial products. As digital infrastructure improves, the collaboration could expand to incorporate more innovative solutions that cater to the diverse needs of African consumers and businesses.



There are many options to explore. Developing the virtual card is one, facilitating supplier payments is another. We can also envision linking this card to the credit and overdraft solutions we have launched in several countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Botswana. Finally, by analyzing the usage data from our new service, we will be able to significantly enhance our offerings at both Mastercard and Orange Money—undoubtedly uncovering some major surprises along the way.<del></del>



Q. What are the biggest challenges and opportunities you anticipate in rolling out this partnership across the seven countries and what are the plans to expand this collaboration beyond the initial seven countries?



Kane:&nbsp; As we can see it, we have three main challenges:



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Regulatory framework which imposes some limits to the Mobile Money Operators that are necessary from a regulation perspective but that sometimes limit the services we can provide customers. While some regions are ahead, some countries still see mobile money as a risk or a new tax opportunity rather than a fantastic accelerator of financial inclusion.</li>



<li>Varying levels of digital literacy in different countries. What made the success of Orange Money is the pedagogy and the education. We carry on with any new service.</li>



<li>Adapting to the unexpected in an agile way. A payment card linked to a mobile money account behaves fundamentally differently from one linked to a bank account. The reasons for transaction failures are different, the target merchants are different, and both the frequency and average transaction amounts vary. Orange Money and Mastercard will need to adapt to this new framework to evolve the solution and better meet customer expectations.</li>
</ul>



We work daily on tackling these issues with our teams in our 17 markets, but also with our suppliers, partners, and with the regulatory bodies. Expansion is of course on the menu. We are considering many new markets and new products, capitalizing on the experience gathered from the first markets. We are excited to learn about customers behaviors and knowing how innovative Africans are, see how they create new use cases that were not the initial ones. We are also betting on merchants, mainly informal and SMEs. They are the backbone of our economies, and they need all the tailored financial tools to support their growth and way to prosperity. <ins></ins>



Q. How does the partnership fit into Orange’s and Mastercard’s long-term strategies for the African continent, particularly in terms of leveraging mobile technology to enhance financial services?



Ajmal: At Mastercard, we have long envisioned a digital economy that’s accessible to everyone, everywhere, and Africa is at the forefront of this vision. This partnership with Orange harnesses the power of mobile technology, which is already transforming the way Africans engage with financial services. Orange’s reach and our secure, digital payment capabilities create an ecosystem that is accessible, sustainable, and resilient.



We see this partnership as laying a foundation for further innovations across Africa. By 2025, we are aiming not only to provide practical tools but also to foster a landscape where digital wallets offer everything from payments to microloans and e-commerce access.

Significant Strides Taken In Expanding Access To Mobile Financial Services In Sub-Saharan Africa

World Sustainability Day was commemorated recently to serve as an annual reminder to address environmental issues and shift our focus towards reducing waste, preserving the planet, and fostering a sustainable future. This requires a commitment from big corporations to take a bold stance when it comes to sustainability.&nbsp;&nbsp;



That is why Nestlé has always put in place practical solutions to reduce waste – from production to packaging. At the heart of this transformation are circular principles, simple yet fundamental means of shifting their approach to recycling. Critically, at Nestlé, circularity comes alive in three sustainability pillars: Rethink, Reduce, and Repurpose. These principles are a practical roadmap for evolving operations towards more sustainable means of production.&nbsp;



The company’s commitment to sustainability is highlighted by its focus on Designed for Recycling (D4R) materials. This strategy ensures that packaging, like the new laminate material used in Nestlé Nespray sachets, can easily enter the recycling process, preventing more waste from ending up in landfills. The shift to D4R materials has already resulted in a 78-tonne reduction in packaging waste per year, demonstrating the significant impact that thoughtful design can have.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Nestlé&#8217;s brands are making great strides towards packaging Designed for Recycling. Each of these popular products are known for their distinctive qualities – KitKat&#8217;s famous finger chocolate wafer, Bar One&#8217;s layered caramel and malted nougat, Tex&#8217;s crispy chocolate-covered wafers, Aero&#8217;s bubbly texture, the biggest coffee brand in the world NESCAFÉ, household powdered milk products like Nestlé Nespray and Nestlé Klim, and the chocolate malt beverage Nestlé Milo – demonstrate this commitment. In addition, there are many practical ways in which consumers can rethink the way that they repurpose materials, such as empty NESCAFÉ jars. Beyond recycling, the jars can be used to store various dry goods; you can decorate your garden by using them as planters, they can be wrapped and used for putting thoughtful gifts inside, and you can even use them as a decorative piece to store your stationery in.&nbsp;



NESCAFÉ is a brand which stands out when it comes to sustainability from an environmental point of view. Not only are NESCAFÉ’s great tasting products accessible, but they are also responsibly sourced. In 2022, the brand launched its NESCAFÉ Plan 2030, which focuses on regenerative agriculture and greenhouse gas emission reduction. Building on 10 years&#8217; experience of the NESCAFÉ Plan 2030, Nestlé is accelerating its work to help tackle climate change and address social and economic challenges in the NESCAFÉ value chains.&nbsp;



Some of the packaging aligns with Nestlé&#8217;s broader goal of reducing its reliance on virgin plastic. Virgin plastic, made from new rather than recycled materials, significantly contributes to environmental degradation. Nestlé has already achieved an 8.1% reduction as of 2021. In 2023, the company integrated 30% recycled plastic into all shrink film used in its packaging, leading to a 190-tonne reduction in virgin plastic annually. These efforts are part of Nestlé&#8217;s commitment to reducing virgin plastic consumption by 33% by 2025, a goal that aligns with the company&#8217;s broader vision of environmental stewardship. Further to the above, Nestlé&#8217;s ambitious strides towards plastic neutrality stand out as a significant contribution to global environmental goals. As the world&#8217;s largest food and beverage company, the company is committed to reducing plastic waste and designing recyclable packaging, addressing the growing concerns over plastic pollution. By 2025, the company aims to have 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable and has already achieved notable milestones along this journey.&nbsp;



In line with its vision for a waste-free future, Nestlé aims to ensure that none of its packaging —particularly plastics — ends up in landfills, oceans, lakes, or rivers. Mark Helfrich, Packaging Engineering Manager for Nestlé East &amp; Southern Africa Region (ESAR), states, &#8220;We are committed to tackling plastic waste at every level, ensuring that our packaging does not contribute to environmental harm. By leveraging innovation and scale, we aim to deliver solutions that matter.&#8221;&nbsp;



South Africa&#8217;s plastic recycling landscape is also evolving, and Nestlé plays a key role. The South African Plastics Pact&#8217;s 2023 report shows that plastic waste is declining, with a <a href="https://www.saplasticspact.org.za/2022/12/29/sa-plastics-pact-2021-annual-report-published/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recycling</a> rate of 43.2% in 2020, including a 35.4% rate for plastic packaging. This progress is supported by a growing recycling industry that reduces pollution and provides employment for thousands of reclaimers nationwide. Nestlé&#8217;s efforts have contributed to this momentum by reducing plastic usage at a time when sustainability is more important than ever. In 2023, Nestlé reduced the amount of plastic used for pallet wrapping in its South African factories by 50%. By adopting new shrink film technology that maintains strength and tear resistance while using less material, the company reduced plastic packaging by 115 tonnes annually.&nbsp;



Innovation remains central to Nestlé&#8217;s efforts to tackle plastic pollution. The Fit-for-Purpose initiative optimizes packaging by reducing material thickness, size, and weight and minimises the company&#8217;s environmental footprint. A notable example of this is the 2022 lightweighting project, where Nestlé redesigned the plastic spoons included in infant formula cans for products like Nestlé Nan, Nestlé Nido, and Nestlé Lactogen. This redesign resulted in a 60% weight reduction, saving 93 tonnes of plastic annually. These efforts reflect Nestlé&#8217;s dedication to reducing plastic waste and demonstrate the company&#8217;s leadership in implementing circular economy principles, which aim to minimise waste by reusing and recycling materials.&nbsp;



It is essential to reflect on corporations&#8217; role in the global effort to reduce plastic pollution and achieve a more sustainable future. Nestlé&#8217;s initiatives are a powerful reminder that large-scale businesses have both the responsibility and the capacity to lead by example.
