National Basketball Association (NBA) Africa recently unveiled an initiative to support the sports and creative industries on the continent through mentorship and capital infusion.

Clare Akamanzi, CEO of NBA Africa, said in a statement, about the launch of the Triple-Double: NBA Africa Startup Accelerator: “This groundbreaking new initiative reflects our commitment to expanding the African sports ecosystem, and these incredible companies will be at the forefront of shaping the future of sport on the continent.”

Operating under the guidance of ALX Ventures, a technology incubator, the accelerator program is open to early-stage startups across Africa, focusing on event management, ticketing, youth development, AI, and digital marketing within the sports and creative sectors.

Startups have until May 31 to apply, with the top 10 submissions advancing to the next stage.

Selected startups will receive mentorship from NBA Africa, ALX leadership, and other corporate stakeholders to refine their products and develop business strategies. The journey culminates in a Demo Day in New York City during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, where finalists will pitch their innovations to a panel of industry leaders.

The impact of this initiative extends beyond business growth.

Beninese sports enthusiast Evrard Odjrado shares with FORBES AFRICA, “The program will help African startups to upgrade their skills and develop new fundraising strategies. Also, it will have a big impact on the African economy and transform definitively the sports industries.”

For Nigerian analyst Dayo Mustapha, the development is important for the education and investment in youth development towards expansion of Africa’s sporting and creative sectors.

“With ALX Ventures’ track record in nurturing young techpreneurs, coupled with robust funding and mentorship, this initiative will catalyze significant advancements in the sports industry through digital technology,” says Mustapha.
